Hello all,
I’m new to the forum and DIY project truck owning. I picked up an early 1991 D250 Cummins (no IC, 3 spd auto trans) in overall good shape (almost zero rust) from a colleague at work. I’m limited by my mechanic knowledge, and especially budget, but I’ve always wanted to do this. Taken me until 45 y/o to put together enough extra to even attempt.
I thought I’d start with easy stuff, like cleaning (sat in a pasture for a couple years) assessing, replacing the a few safety parts like brake booster and master cylinder, since the brakes are barely working and looked awful. Now, I’m working on bleeding the brake lines to see where to go next. As I was rolling backward in my rather tight garage to get more light under the hood/engine bay, I was looking back over my right shoulder for my wife’s car in the driveway. The driver side door, which was still partially open, caught a ladder sitting against the wall. I heard the noise And immediately hit the brake, but given the state of disrepair of the brakes, truck rolled another 1-2 feet, (as I yelled Nooo!) pulling the door just past 90° outward and damaging it severely… I wanted to cry.
After kicking myself many times for being so careless, I removed the door. It appears that the door took all the damage, hinges and A-frame look ok.
Look, guys, I got a really good deal on this from an older gentleman, or I wouldn’t have been able to afford it. This stupidity on my part may take it out of my budget to fix.
I need a little guidance…
Is this damaged beyond repair? Is it worth trying, or will that cost a fortune?
I looked at local salvages with no luck yet. Seems like good condition trucks sell whole, salvages of this age tend to be in reasonably poor shape. Rusted, damaged.
Any thoughts on my next move??? Thanks.
