i think that was for pulling behind an RV. if i remember right for some reason the manual also says it should only ever be put on a flat bed if you need a tow. seems kinda weird it's ok to pull it with an RV but not ok to pull it with a tow truck

I think this is for not towing with one axle off the road because of the transfer case. I worked with VW Audi for 25 years- I remember as the first Quattro's came out, we had to install a plate brake tester because it was not allowed to have one axle on the roll for brake test while the other axle was on the ground. I loved the tester- you drive on it, brake at the defined spot and it shows you the force- it even had a function where you could see the alignment as you rolled over with straight wheels - but that was more a gimmick than useful- but it was impressive for the customers :naughty:

Neat idea. But I love my slap shift in my 11.
If they removed steering shift and left slap shift but had knob...that'd be ok

My question is how do you slap shift a knob? :roflsquared:

Took a while to get used to it. Several times after reversing I would go to Park instead of Drive, but that hasn't happened for quite a while now.

The only functional disadvantage to it that I've come up with is that you must have a thumb and finger (on the same hand!) available to operate it, so if you're holding, say, a donut, you have to put it down to change direction.

I guess if there were a choice I'd probably take the traditional column, but it doesn't bother me.

Ya dont lay down the donut..Thats a hand to mouth highly detailed movement that takes seconds to master....:roflsquared: Now if you have coffee and donut and driveing, thats an art in itself..That move takes much longer and a bigger truck to master..

AND YES this truck and my new one and my new sport are all auto friggin matic, only one with a knob is me and the hemi..lol

It's great

I love it. It is so cool. I have had multiple trucks with the column shifter. I don't mind it either. But, when people get in my truck, they are always amazed by the rotary shifter.

It take some time to get used it. Sometimes I forgot to put in in park. Oops lol. Don't freak out on me. "Omg horrible dangerous driver!" That's not the case. It rolls 1/2 inch forward and I say.... "Oh yeah haha." After awhile, you get used to it.

I think it is nefty.

The fact that it frees up a ton of space in the center console area is great. I think Ram also did a good job with the tactile feel of the knob - rarely do I "overshoot" and get the wrong selection. I'm a big fan. But I understand veteran truck owners might not like it bc they don't like "different" in general.

What is this freeing up a TON of space talk? Maybe if you're used to a center console shifter I get it but I thought we were comparing the knob to a column shifter. And with that in mind, my column shifter has NEVER been in the way of anything.

I've gotten used to it, but I still prefer a column shifter. That said, I'd prefer it in the center a la the Durango...

Had the truck since last Aug and am pretty much used to the knob now. When I jump in the car I'm reaching for the dash to shift it.It's like anything else once you get used to it it's all good.

Console shifters in trucks are just wrong to me. I like trucks to have a bench up front

Doesn't matter to me. Took some getting used to when I first got the truck. Every now and then I will reach for the volume control instead of the shifter.

Customer stopped by the other day with a 2016 3500. Didn't know you could still get an MT in a full size truck of any flavor. THAT is pretty cool. Too bad I have no real use for an HD.

Side note - how much sense does it make that a 1500 can have more payload than a 2500?

Took a little while to get use to. I was so use to column shifters. Now after a year and a half, I'm use to it and when I drive a column shifter, I still reach for the rotary shift.

The shift knob, volume knob and a/c fan knob are too close in proximity to each other. Its too easy to go reach for something and then have to actually look at it to b sure you've got the right one.

Another concern is since the transmission gear selection is electrical in nature, how reliable will it be for the long term. Will you have it in park once day, hop out to do something, then find that it moved into reverse or drive on its own. Prefer a mechanical mechanism.

Is the 6 speed column shifter a mechanical linkage?

I've been driving a rental ('15 Tahoe LT) for the past week. It has a column shifter with the gear selector and tow/haul mode button built into the shifter handle. I love having another column shifter. I wish my '16 1500 had the exact setup this Tahoe has, even if all the shifter did, was operate an electric shift module.

After a year now, I think I'm a fan. It's simple, modern, and unobtrusive. Saves alot of room for, well, nothing. But less is more sometimes. I do seem to shut the truck down often in gear though when I'm in a hurry...which of course leads to waiting and waiting for it to quit blinking, costing me more time.

Got a 1500 loaner when my mega was getting the step rails installed. Hated it. The knob saves no extra space compared to the column shifter, the handle literally never gets in the way of anything. The notches for each position of the knob seemed neither reassuring or satisfying. There's just confidence when shifting on the column
