Well I am only 250 miles into my new Ram and just, on a whim, opened up my fuel door. I just noticed that it says e85 fuel.

WTF did I just get myself into and now I am wondering if this is why this truck sat at my dealer for so long.

This will still run regular unleaded right? And this has me wondering if this engine, being an ethanol engine, isn't the one that is claimed to get 25MPG.

Thanks for the help
David

Is it a flex fuel truck? E85 usually get terrible mpg.

Not sure if it's flex or not. The fuel cap just says e85.

I see you have the V6 which is the Pentastar engine...you can burn either regular unleaded or E85 in that engine whereas those of us with the Hemi V8 can only utilize regular unleaded. You will notice less MPG with e85 than with regular unleaded.

You should have the Flex Fuel badge on the lower right of your tailgate.

Nope. That's not there. I would have seen that prior to opening my fuel door.

When you say normal, do you mean the window sticker mileage?
(which I believe is 17 - 25)

Those numbers are running unleaded, cause E85 mileage is listed as 12 - 17

ETA: Kinda makes me wonder if someone at the dealership debadged the "Flexfuel" it since it was not selling?

Open the hood...if underneath you see an engine with a cover on it which states "3.6L VVT" on the cover, then you have the Pentastar which permits you to run e85 or regular unleaded...and yes, you will get reduced mileage with e85. The mileage posted on the Monroney sticker is based upon regular unleaded - not e85...you will never see the 25 mpg with e85.

Yes, it says 3.6VVT. But with regular unleaded should I get closer to 25? I have no need or desire to use e85.

I guess that I'm just confused when you say "you will never see the 25mpg with e85" . Are you referring to the fuel itself or this particular engine? Thanks

The e85 fuel itself has less energy than regular unleaded fuel. It may be cheaper, but you get less mileage with the corn fuel. From what I've heard about it it's not even worth it to use it. Regular unleaded you will achieve much better mileage than with corn running through the engine.

You can run e-85. But you will not get great mileage. The engine is designed to run on unleaded, but can burn e-85 as well. I think it has something to do with fuel lines and injectors that make it able to have e-85.

Just keep running unleaded and don't worry about that sticker.

Run regular unleaded and you'll see 25 if you drive it very, very easy. Use e85 to save money (because it's cheaper per gallon) and you'll get closer to 19 or 20 mpg max. Use regular unleaded if you want best mileage.

Thanks for clearing that up and pardon my ignorance. I was just afraid the dealer sold me something else then what I was looking for, that being the V6 that is at least rated for 25. I know that's going to be hard to achieve, but I'd wanted that as opposed to something rated at 20 and then getting 17 or 18.

This is the primary reason I went with the V6. I like driving a full size truck but just don't need the towing and torque of the v8.

And finally, I couldn't even tell ya where a e85 station is. That's hippy gas as far as I'm concerned. ;)

Thanks again sir.

Not all the v6 have a flex fuel badge don't know why. I got the v6 and ran e85 first week and wondering why I wasn't getting the 20 to 25 mpg range then switched to regular and saw significant boost. I'm now at 21 mpg (mostly Highway some city, I'd say a 70/30 split). I think you would be hard pressed to get to 25 unless you are on Highway for a trip or something. However I may be wrong. Any who enjoy the truck !
