EGR coolers lifespan averages 80k miles.

I have a 2016 Cummins with 148,596 miles. No issues yet. I change the radiator fluid every 50K. I do that and tranny fluid at the same time. My first ever Diesel, my friends tell me just drive it and don’t worry.

What's your driving profile? Location? Again, if moderate climate and mostly highway, egr's last longer.

*Knocks on wood* So far I haven't had any issues with mine and I have 205K on my 6.4. I have had issues with the coolant lines. When I did take out I took a look inside. Pretty sooted up but nothing crazy I thought. Rinsed it out if I remember.

Pretty sure the larger issue with EGR coolers is those attached to vehicles with a turbo. Will be a real show when they start putting particulate filters on all vehicles such the case with the Ford Maverick the first vehicle to do so, coming soon. Turbo plus particulate filters plus EGR coolers, plus def, what possibly could go wrong.

Thinking that was the issue with 1st Ford Ecoboosts, circa 2010 or so?

it does seam they have turned it around, perhaps the benefit of being the early ones to do so.

Yes a retired colleague got an ecoboost last year after Ford claimed they fixed everything after 10 years of customer development testing.
I think it affected all engines, not just a % as with Hemi cam wiping.

I was still working then, reading about the EPA fuel mileage mandates and manufacturers trying boosted small engines vs cutout regular size engines. They ALL failed!

There are many if not most people on this forum whose fall back position is I am sure the engineers have solved these issues. I believe if we ever could see how many products are hurried to market w/o real engineering we all would be shocked. Like I was saying prior, it is better to be ignorant then informed 2025.

I lived it, my man.
As Technical Projected Leader, I was ORDERED by management to ship an undeveloped product we hadn't hardened enough where the control housing cracked and fell off in short hours from high vibration resonance.
I was ORDERED to finish the work and then provide a field campaign to fix the known defective products installed in the field.

I have more stories if you want to get really depressed. I was greatly stressed and thought about quitting. My boss talked me down, probably from a misery loves company standpoint. Management made us deliver to plan despite understaffing us 50%. I knew because I was responsible for the entire technical project plan.

One truck is hardly an example now is it,lol.
If he bought the 22 new,that means he put roughly 110,000 miles per year on his 18,so i'm guessing he was doing hot shoting and the truck probably never idled much,and the majority of the miles were all highway miles at the speed limit or slightly above.A well maintained hotshot truck usually has less mechanical issues then the majority of daily drivers,as once it's running it's usually making the majority of its miles as highway miles
The only thing really saving the 6.4 coolers is the temperature of the exhaust gases being fed through them,as a gas engines exhaust temps are lower then a diesals exhaust temps when both are working

How was he using the truck,as that would mean more.Was he hotshotting with it,or how was he putting that many miles on per year.

The 18 did aproxx 300K of 444K hotshotting with the 22 is all hotshotting miles

That's the easiest life a truck can have if it's well maintained,as once it's running,it's making miles and usually it's on the road 10+ hours every day it's being used.
Very few hotshot trucks have mechanical issues if they're maintained,and most are,as the trucks aren't making any money sitting in a garage.

2015 ram Outdoorsman:
I did my EGR valve at 65k , was simple and really was cleaner than I expected. Valve not sticky , moved easily..
Got the *ding* service EGR cooler see dealer " ... no thank you on the dealer visit. Found a nice gasket kit from " Genos garage" came complete with rubber plugs to hold cleaner overnight.
I was amazed @135k I could see light between the fins fairly easily. I let it soak overnight anyways. I knew it was clean and probably not get any cleaner overnight.
Rinsed tank out first thing next morning and put my truck back together.
Fairly straight simple job besides the far end cooler straps way up under the firewall.
Not too bad of a job .
I called my dealer to get an idea of how much money I saved. I had about 8 hours into it, not bad considering I had to drill and tap my intake manifold because on of the bolts came out terrible. Took all the threads out too. My dealer said " we don't do that service , it never goes good and the orings always leak" . I won't buy a 4th ram from this dealer. What do they do when people bring them for service?
My kit came with all new seals and gaskets from Genos.
