Considering turning on 2nd prime gear in 65RFE in 2014 HEMI. Is it worth it for a daily driver, since 2nd prime is so close in ratio to the third (see below)? Getting HP tuner soon. Watched a few videos on youtube where people did that, but didn't seem that there's a whole lot of difference. Just a very small bump. Maybe good for racing trucks. What do you think?

1st=3.00
2nd=1.67
3rd=1.50 (2nd prime)
4th=1.00
5th=0.75
6th=0.67.

You’re only going to notice it at WOT, and even then, not much. During daily driving, especially with the torque converter unlocked, there will be no difference.

It provides a boost at WOT for entering 4th, as 4th usually kills RPMs and acceleration.

If it's a 14,i think it should have 2nd prime utilized already.It'll be 3rd gear in the cluster.They changed the tranny programming in 13 to utilize 2nd prime

They’re talking about using 2nd prime in normal driving without Manual Select. I think atleast, lol.

I've had 2nd prime enabled for over a year now and I absolutely love it. For normal everyday driving the shift is a bit quick and kinda pointless but when I'm towing my camper it really helps when getting out on the highway. That little baby 3rd gear shift just makes the transition to 1:1 gear ratio much smoother when the engine is under load.

I have a 2011 and at the track if shifted manually it makes about 3 tenths of a second in quarter mile. How is enabaling 2nd prime one, with a trans tune, I'm not sure. I already have a flashpak tuner which affects shift rpm and shift firmness. With K&N drop in , programmer set at 87 octane tune and Flowmaster HD 50 with single exhaust truck runs [email protected] mph in quarter. It is a 2 wheel drive with 392 posi short bed with 265/7017 tires. If not too expensive I might try it. would like to use all gears.

I don't think in Auto the transmission actually shifts to 3rd on mine. It is considered 6 speed tranny, for what it's worth. And I can manually step through it. I did watch Frostbite video about it. I think his tranny configured as 5sp and the shift from 3rd (2nd prime) to 4th is barely noticeable. If anything as HEMI395 mentioned, the transition to 1:1 (4th gear) will be smoother. Thank you everyone for your responses! I will probably try it, once I get the tuner.

Normal operation of the 545RFE and 65RFE is shifting from 1-2-4-5-6. It’s the same between BOTH transmissions, but Chrysler gave you the option to manually select 3rd (2P) in 2012 with the 65RFE. 2nd Prime is only used during KICKDOWNS, and you can see this pretty easily. If you slow down to 40 and stomp on the gas, your RPMs will jump, and then jump again a few RPMs. This is 2P.

I have an 11 Sport with the Slap Stick. I can manually select 3rd (which is 2nd Prime).

Per the dash, mine goes 1,2,3,4,5,D. And if I manually shift from 5th to Drive the RPMs drop a bit.

If I want to pass someone on a 2 lane road, I manually downshift to 3rd, brfore mashing on the accelerator Petal. Maybe I ought to shift to 2nd instead?

Just keep it out of OD, which would be 4 & 5 for you.

Do the upgrades that i mentioned in our PMs and you’d be pretty safe with doing WOTs in OD without worrying about shifting it manually. You just need to keep line pressure which the stock VB doesn’t do a good job of.

It also keeps load off of the 4th gear clutches if i recall correctly and makes the trans not struggle under load.

I have a dumb question......

How do they get 8 gears out a transmission with 4 gear sets?

I misread this, 3rd in your truck is 4th on the 65RFE.

Your vehicle doesn’t use 2P in normal driving mode or manual select mode. The truck will only use 2P for WOT shifting, but there’s no use for it otherwise.

3rd is DD (Direct Drive) for your truck, 4 & 5 is Overdrive and 1 & 2 is Underdrive. Sorry for the confusion! I got my transmissions mixed up :)

That first video is the only one that makes an attempt to explain how they get 8 speeds. He gets into it at approximately minute 10. Honestly, doesn't do a very good job.

For lack of a better explanation, the P1 and P2 are like a (4 speed) sub-transmission inside the main transmission. That in turn is used to make 5/6 and 7/8 out of the last 2 sets of planetary gear sets. He says it's an incredibly complex piece of engineering. I had to watch it at least four times to pick up on how it even works.

My old mountain bike got 21 speeds out of a transmission with a total of 10 cogs..

I can't find the ZF explanation right at the moment,but they had a good explanation of how the power passes through the gear sets and brakes to get 8 speeds out of it. If you go digging around ZF's site they should have it somewhere,as it had the diagrams of how the power flow through it works

I have one last stupid question. That's not exactly true. I have dozens. Like why can you see your reflection in a mirror? How come you can see thru a solid material like glass? Why is Keith Richards still alive?

Second Prime, or 3rd (which is alone is confusing) in a 545RFE, or 65FE (confusion squared), I always assumed that was the torque converter locking up while in 2nd. Is that correct?
Or is 2P, or 3rd an actual gear?
