Roadkill's Mike Finnegan Preps His ’55 Chevy Gasser for HOT ROD Drag Week

Finnegan's Chevy Gasser, "Blasphemi," just received new upgrades, so the Roadkill co-host spent a day at the track dialing it in.

HOT ROD Drag Week 2024 is right around the corner, and Mike Finnegan, Roadkill co-host and 2019 Hot Rod Drag Week Gasser class champion, isn't wasting any time. He just wrapped a day of dragstrip testing for this year's event in "Blasphemi," his 1955 Chevy. He holds the Drag Week Gasser class record with an 8.90 average, but isn’t content to rest on his laurels. "Lately we haven't gone very fast, because we just keep changing things," said Mike. "So now, let's stop changing things and actually test before Drag Week, so we can try to have our stuff together before we show up."

Finnegan and his crew have been busy since we last saw the car. He added coil-on-plug ignition to the same Blower Shop 8-71 blown Hemi, along with a dry-sump oiling system, new front suspension, and a new fiberglass one-piece front end. Mike said he was considering something new for the straight-axle front suspension when an unfortunate event finally encouraged him to change it. "It was like the universe was trying to tell me to do it," he said.

The incident happened during a race earlier this year. After packing his parachute on the shoulder of a return road, he slammed into a short metal pole sticking out of the ground as he made his way back to the pit. He couldn’t see the pole past the large hoodscoop, and the resulting damage consisted of multiple bent parts in the straight-axle front suspension.

When he got home, he worked with Scott's Hotrods in Tennessee to design a custom front suspension and crossmember. "I called him and said, I know you don't normally do this, but I'd like to build a one-off front end with a lot of travel and a really just ridiculous crossmember that looks out of place. They did just that, and it came out awesome," said Mike.
The first thing everyone wants to know is whether the crossmember hit the ground after a wheelie. No—when the suspension fully bottomed-out, there will still be four inches of ground clearance. The ultra-low crossmember and long A-arms, combined with Viking coil-overs, allow for eight inches of total wheel travel.

"On one of the first passes we made today, we wheelied, and from the driver's seat, I thought it was a four-foot wheelie, but it was only about a foot," said Mike. "Because the wheels droop so much, it’s an interesting sensation. Though the front suspension is new, Blasphemi still retains the Jim Meyer Racing Gasser chassis we saw the guys install nearly 10 years ago on an episode of Roadkill.
In the process of making these changes, Mike also wanted to eliminate the hoodscoop so he could see through the windshield better. Taking it off left a massive hole in the hood, so he called Dennis Taylor, a fellow Drag Week racer and Hot Rod Garage host Alex Taylor's dad. Dennis had a spare Tri-Five one-piece front end for his racecar that he donated to the cause. "That thing is way better than the one I had,” said Mike. "Dennis is a Renaissance man; he makes his own molds and hand-lays it himself."

Under the new front end is the same 528ci Hemi from 2019, an engine that has been rebuilt a few times. It’s the same engine that took Blasphemi to a class win at Drag Week 2019. This year, Finnegan is back to a T-56-based six-speed transmission. It's been upgraded with a G-Force gearset and rebuilt with new parts from Tick Performance. "It’s got all the goodies in there to survive clutch-dumping with 1,000 lb-ft of torque," said Mike. The clutch is from Mantic and is surrounded by a QuickTime bellhousing and activated by a new Tick Performance hydraulic throwout bearing. Out back are the same Quick Performance 9-inch and ladder bars.

Mike’s test session happened at Mooresville Dragway in Mooresville, North Carolina. Eric "Biggun" Yost is a longtime Drag Week and HOT ROD Top Speed event winner. He owns and operates Customs by Biggun and has helped Mike over the years with chassis upgrades. He now owns the Dragway and invited Mike up for a day of testing. Tuner and engine builder Pete Harrell of Harrell Engine & Dyno was also on hand. Tony Angelo made the trek down to North Carolina for tuning, too. He will be Mike's co-driver for Drag Week.

The team made multiple adjustments and improvements to get the car dialed for Drag Week. "The first goal is always just to finish, and we're getting better at that," said Mike. They just recently finished their first Midwest Drags, and Mike said it was, the most difficult drag-and-drive events he’s ever done. "My second goal for Drag Week is to run an 8-second pass every day," said Mike. Time will tell, but considering that Blasphemi’s best pass so far is an 8.52 at 161 mph, the car certainly is capable.

Showed that to my oldest uncle when they built it. Back around '70 he and his uncle took a '55 Chevy and put a late 50's 392 hemi with Hilborn; he said it took Russell a solid week to tune that thing right. He only lost once and got so mad about it that after the race someone offered him a bunch of cash in hand for it and sold it on the spot.

Survive to fight another day! Yeah, it seems this year we have the most cars in the sixes that we’ve ever had, and the most in the 7s as well. But being fast is hard on parts and on day two we already have 35 cars out of the competition. For comparison, we lost 48 cars over the course of the full week in 2023, so we’re certainly trending in the wrong direction!

But the racers were bringing their A-game for day two of the HOT ROD Drag Week presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive! With David Schroeder and his Corvette out of the competition Ned Dunphy and his blue Viper were looking good. On his first pass at Indy he ran a 6.203 at 246.44 mph. Rather than punish his ride further he opted to “one-and-done” it, pack up, and get cruising to the next track. Right now, Dunphy is a full 1.5 seconds faster than Les Smith, who is currently holding the number two spot in the Unlimited Class.

Ultimate Iron saw David Armentrout knocked out of the competition, giving Bryant Goldstone and his 1973 AMC Javelin a bit of breathing room. Goldstone was a touch faster at Indy with a best run of 6.507 at 224.96 mph. Remember, the best times on each day are averaged over the week, so consistency is important, since one bad day can ruin your chances.

Gasser A/Gas was heating up with a tight battle between Wayne Baker in his 1963 Chevy II and Mike Finnegan in his 1955 Bel Air. Finnegan was the top dog on Monday but was off a bit today after doing a spectacular wheelstand pass. His best time was a 9.370 at 112.05 mph compared to Baker’s 8.792 at 153.44. As you can tell by Finnegan’s trap speed, he had issues on that run.

Street Race Small Block Power Adder (PA) continues to be a vicious dogfight! Bill Schwarz was knocked to second place by Randy Seward and his 1991 Calypso Green Mustang while Brian Acton swapped spots with Michael Malone. Hot on their heels is Chris Merry in fifth place. How close is it? The average right now for the top nine cars in this class ranges from 8.50300 at first to 8.60300 for the ninth spot!

Hot Rod Garage’s Alex Taylor continues to battle it out in the Ultimate Iron Class and currently sits in third place with a two-day average of 6.88600 seconds at 214.725 mph, which puts her right on the heels of second-place holder Steven Spiess (6.86650 at 206.100 mph). Her trap speeds are there, but can she find the traction to squeeze out a slightly better time?

HOT ROD Drag Week DAY 1 Results: National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio

DAY 1 RESULTS PDF

Sunday saw competitors running test sessions at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio, but Monday is when things got serious as the HOT ROD Drag Week, presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive, shifted into high gear for day one.

The Unlimited class started off strong with Ned Dunphy running a 6.196 at 247.16 mph pass in his 2013 Dodge Viper. A solid run but it’s a long week and the unlimited class already had its first loss to attrition with Klaiton Hartman bowing out of the competition, leaving nine others to fight it out.

Hot on Dunphy’s heels, and the only other car in Unlimited Class to make it into the 6s, was David Schroeder's 2019 Chevy Corvette. His best run of the day was a 6.784 at 210.87 mph, so he’s going to have to step it up to keep the pressure on Dunphy.

Ultimate Iron class was running hard and at the end of the day was being let by Bryant Goldstone in his sick 1973 AMC Javelin. His best blast of 6.523 at 223.88 mph was enough to hold off David Armentrout and his 1967 Chevy II managed a best pass of 6.815 at 208.68 mph!

Street Race Small Block Power Adder (PA) is a straight-up dogfight! 43 cars made up this class and already three have had to drop out. Right now, Bill Schwarz sits on top in his 1969 Chevelle with a run of 8.501 at 160.59 mph, but hot on his heels, and we’re talking red-hot, is Randy Seward in his 1991 Mustang with a run of 8.502 at 160.56 mph! And if that’s not tight enough, in third place is Michael Maione with an 8.504 (at 163.55 mph), and fourth is being held by Brian Acton with an 8.506-second pass!
