Gen 3 vs Gen 4 diesel MPG?

Looking to buy my first Dodge 2500 diesel, 4x4, shortbed. Will be loading a 2500# Camper and towing a single axle trailer with SxS (2,000#). I’ve heard that the 5.9L gets better mpg than the 6.7L. Would appreciate real live experience. Thanks.

I've got an 06 5.9 CTD, last fill All Highway, no load, home to Phoenix and back (downhill most of the way to Phx) about 24.5 to Phx, overall for both ways 23.7 Average for in-town/on highway around 21.5 to 22. Home altitude about 5500ft, Phoenix 1100ft. It's Arizona we all bend the speed limit average about Speed limit +5mph. This is a 2500 quad cab, 6.5ft bed 4wd.
