Help, I'm getting flustrated

So I tried the do-it-myself route. Bought Head unit, then the dash kit and harness. Got the wires soldered up and plugged in, turned the key, and nothing. I'm 99% sure I have a ground. However, the package the plug adapter was in says up to '04 Ram, it doesn't include any Rams newer than that. I just assumed it would work.


Went down the road to a shop that specializes in car audio and talked to them. The guy says I could need an interface that costs $150 for the factory amp. Granted I am pretty sure an SLT trim package without the Infinity system would not have a factory amp. Is this true? I showed the guy my plug and the one he had was the same. There's so many pins on the factory plug, I'm not sure that the all match up.

I guess if all else fails, I'll check the ground again, and if still nothing I'll see what the sound place can do. May even go ahead and get an 8" or two put under the back seat, along with an amp. What would y'all do?

well it sounds like you know what your doing, and the hiccup may just be in the plug? but if the audio shops is the same that kinda makes it a sticky situation..

maybe it is the wrong wiring harness, I thought they were all the same from 02-08 though. I know you wont use all the wires. I would just re check all your wires and ground, thats probably it. and yes, only the infinity system has an amp.

Dodge Ram changed to Can Bus in 2006, so you need to get a different harness. They are more expensive than the pre Can Bus harness.

Ahh, that was what I didn't want to hear Rus. I also went to Advance and looked at one they had, year range was up to 08 I think it was. It was all the same except for one pin that was in a different place which had a brown wire coming from it for the mute option. I'll do some searching online and see what I find for the Can Bus harness.

And on a side note, what is a range to spend on a 'middle of the road' amp and sub(s). I'm new to audio, so I don't really know. I just know the more you spend, the higher the quality in most cases. And I did find a interface:

I had an 05 3500 laramie with out the Infinity system and didn't have any issues with adding an aftermarket head unit. I didn't need a interface to get it to work. You can try crutchfield.com and see if it show that you need anything special.

Yeah, that can bus I posted the link to said 05 and up Durangos, 06 and up Rams, so looks like I gotta spend mo money. Thanks for the help everyone.

If you order from Crutchfield, all their harnesses are plug and play.
