I currently have a DiabloSport Trinity EX Platinum in my truck. I decided to take the dive and I just purchased an "open box" HPTuner MPVI4 for $150 under list. Plan on copying the Diablo 91 tune I already have in the ECM and studying it in the HP VCM Editor before I make any changes and HP tune installs.Maybe correct the erratic RPM boost settings.

Have read they will work just fine on a Diablo unlocked ECM.

Any pearls of wisdom before I dive into it?

Plan on keeping the Trinity EX in truck for gauge monitoring and logging. Will sell the extra un-married Trinity EX platinum I have

I've had my HPtuners setup for just over a year now, and I am not a pro tuner. First thing I did was shut off MDS, then new stat and adjusted PWM fan down (brought ECT way down), then trans shift points higher, then small timing changes and other minor stuff. My truck runs like a top now, very peppy and smooth. Maybe not maximum power, but it's not a muscle car and never will be.

Obviously you know you could ruin your engine and/or trans with the tuning power you now have, haha. I would say to start slow, and proceed with any changes very carefully. Multiple backups of all tunes are a necessity IMHO. The guys on the HPtuners Forum were of somewhat limited help (it's like they want to hide tuning secrets, unless getting paid). I got more help from watching assorted YouTube vids.

All of my changes are relatively minor. If you're striving for max power, then be real careful not to damage anything. You could consider a pro tune, but then it would likely be locked and you'd have no ability to make minor adjustments.

HPtuners is a great tool, I'm enjoying it immensely. Good luck with yours!!!

Thanx for the tips. I have warned others about the potential of hosing the truck due to the ability of changing everything with HP Tuner... Slow and easy is the secret for a novice me thinks.

I just have:
1. Variram intake
2. 195 Stat
3. Clutch fan delete w/ the V6 fan
4. Magnalow catback
5. Shutter delete

Only thing the Diablo has that I got to figure out in the HPT is the throttle response settings. I like the enhanced response.

Considering long tubes....
If I ever have the cam/lifters problem, then it will get the MDS delete cam/lifter parts and go with that (or a 6.4 BFG).

I have personally read Diablo tunes and then flashed them with HP Tuners. I have never had a problem but I have read that the parameters between Diablo and HP are different so there may be some issues with doing that.

As mentioned, just keep in mind with HP it's VERY easy to change something that would damage your motor.

My first suggestion would be to purchase a wideband and install it prior to any tuning. Second would be to check out The Tuning School.

Absolutely make certain HP Tuners offers support. I'm 4 months and over a grand into tuning my 24, and still waiting on HP tuners to get back to me with any proposed solution on why I cannot even get a copy of my base tune out of my unlocked 2024.

I follow up monthly with little to no response from HP tuners. They just don't care and take their sweet time in working on things.

I've purchased licenses, upgrade mpvi to version 4, coordinated with FRP, purchased two ECMs and had them unlocked and the unlock cable from HP tuners.

And they still cannot tell me what is wrong.

Using Diablo, it was 1 vin change a download and able to tune, to adjust rpm, temp settings and throttle acceleration settings.

Not saying Diablo is better saying they have better customer service.

I have a truck tuned with HP tuners, but only because it's a 14. It seems HP tuners cannot tune a 24.

My recent experience

Already have an AEM wideband I got from DiabloSport for free when I bought the tuner / ECM pkg.

That seems truly odd. On my '19, I was able to EASILY (on the first try) copy the entire OEM stock tune from the locked OEM PCM, then save that as a 'hpt' file, emailed that file to HPtuners, and they put it into a brand new unlocked PCM. They shipped me the brand new unlocked PCM, which was now loaded with my OEM stock tune. I installed the new PCM in about 5 minutes, and it's been tuning nirvana ever since, never a hiccup. I have the locked OEM PCM sitting on a shelf in my garage, as backup.

Has your base tune been modified in any way with Diablo? If so, perhaps that's causing a glitch.

Also, perhaps you've posted there already, but this seems like the type of issue where the HPtuners Forum might work well for you. I'd post this issue there and see if you can find the solution.

This is a 20k mile truck, it's never been tuned. Hp Tuners does not have support available for a 24 classic which uses the old architecture. If it was a 19 or a 21 5th gen it would be different.

Diablo says they will get to 24 classic model year in 2027. My comment about Diablo is from my experiencewith my 16.

So no, base tune not modified, unlocked pcm has been vin corrected and I can do anything to it but when I go to copy the base tune. Checksum error or I get base tuned copied twice and no trans tune.

I've been on HP tuners forums and in contact with HP tuners directly.

It's definitely not from trying and it's been verified it's not a bad pcm, since i now have two pcms plus the original locked pcm. It's hp tuners software

Is your truck a classic or 5th gen? Maybe I can copy the base tune from my locked pcm

There ya go, that sounds like a possible solution! I was gonna suggest something similar. Please be sure and post results. You should be able to get that tune easily from your locked PCM...... ;)

My truck is 5th Gen.

Well, received the HPT MPVI4 tuner and after figuring out some of the quirks in the VCM Editor software, starting to really like and understand it. Copied the tunes from my locked OEM PCM and my unlocked Diablo 91 octane tuned PCM and then compared them. Gotta say, there isn't a whole lot of difference between them.

Wish they still had the tune depository going like it used to. EPA pressured them and they deleted everything 95% can use that is not OEM.
Not one tune up there for a gen 4 Ram with a Hemi or any performance Dodge. Kinda disappointing.

Just an FYI... They tote the MPVI4 as the latest and greatiest it is supposedly bluetooth capable and WIFI in the future (faceplate even has a WIFI LED on it) . The bluetooth connects for 1 second then disconnects... USELESS... The wifi seems like unicorns and pixi dust for the forseeble future, from what I am seeing on the forum boards. More marketing smoke and mirrors I think.

Speaking of the boards, there was discussions of problems with the 4 and one of the HPT people, with no clue of what to say, stated it isn't compatible with Win 11, only Win 10 and below. Just trying to deflect and blame something else for a short coming in their hardware / software. WHAT? Pathetic....... Take that guy's log in credentials away. Works just fine on Win 11.

Guess I'll keep one of my two Trinity EX Platinum tuners to just use as an onboard display for all kinds of stuff and sell the spare one I have.

Bread boarded a test rig to bench program the ECM's at my desk, instead of in the vehicle.

Almost worked 1st shot until I figured it needed a 120 ohm terminating resistor on the CAN hi / lo leads. With out the resistor, the HP Tuner came back with "Detect Protocol Failure" error. Put in resistor and whammo, worked like a charm.

Now just need to put it all in a box with lighted BATTERY switch, lighted IGNITION ON switch, the OBD2 socket and the ECM plug on a cord. Easy Peasy

Bread boarding a project is just wiring it up loose to prove concept before mounting everything in a box, and wiring it all up nice and neat
