I ordered this one new from the factory in 1997. Got it with 9 miles on the odometer. 23 years later, she still runs and drives with the original motor, transmission, rear end. Engine runs great, transmission still works but not as well as my 2018 8 speed but that might be just an impression. Interior still looks great, seats headliner carpets door panels. Dash is all cracked, but that is a common problem with many trucks of this age. What really amazes me is the paint. it was called driftwood, it's a silver pearl. Never been waxed still shines after a wash. Interior wise, I had to replace the heater fan motor and the radio and the seat spring for the drivers seat plus a couple of window motors and the passenger power door lock.

On the engine: Replaced the crank sensor, the cap and rotor and plugs finally did the wires a couple of years ago, it was probably 2018 it still had the 1997 wires and there wasn't anything wrong with them, just felt because of the age they should be replaced. It's had a serpentine belt tensioner and belt, a water pump and 2 radiators. A starter. 2 pitman arms, still on the original tierod ends and drag link. Replaced rear end speed sensor, Master Cylinder, High pressure power steering hose. fuel pump and of course upper and lower ball joints. Still on the original rotor's and drums calpers and wheel cylinders too!

In 2018 I bought a new silver RAM 1500 quadcab to replace it. But the trade in offers were so rediculously low I decided to keep daily driving it while paying off the new truck. Saves the new truck from door dings and parking lot scrapes.

So now looking ahead to 2021, I've got 9,000 miles on my 2018 paid off RAM and almost 200,000 on my 1998. That is a testiment to a great truck. The 2nd Gen's rule! While they don't get the gas mileage or have the power of the newer trucks, they are there, reliable and start everytime! I'm still happy with it after 23 years. I've owned a new ford, a chevy and 2 Dodge pickups, and I can say without hesitation, The 2nd Gen Dodge Ram beats the rest!

Great truck, clearly the longevity is the result of your good maintenance.

Good story, Dave. I still think the 2nd Gen body style was the best looking of any truck. I had those same wheels on my 2001. What's your secret to your transmission longevity? My 46RE only lived to about 110k miles, and that was following the recommended maintenance.

If you decide to tackle the upper dash pad, get a helper.

RodeoRam: I have changed the trans fluid myself a few times, and had it flushed by the dealer about 10 years ago. The last thing I've done was put a bottle of Lucas Trans fix in. It still works great, and the gas mileage is the tell for me on trans performance. It's still between 13 and 15 most of the time.

Thanks for the complements guys! I hope to keep driving it until I fully retire likely later this year.

Oh I forgot to add that it's still on it's original ac/compressor which has worked with 1 can of freon added in 2004. And it's original alternator. I'm very impressed with chrysler from 1997. That was about the time they were pairing up with Mercedes Benz. The quad cab was a new thing for Dodge and this was one of the first ones off the line. I think Dodge did their part on quality. Never had any wiring issues. In fact the headlight bulbs are still the originals! I feel blessed everyday I take it out on the road. It's a survivor!

Happy to see your '97 still going strong.
My '97 is also still going strong nearing 300,000 miles. Same as you I've only had a few things needing replacing. A couple alts, 1 water pump, rad, AIC valve. All untouched engine and trans, it even still has the original starter.
I bought a 2017 Cummins 2500 4x4 so I gave my '97 to my son.

I agree about the awesome gen 2.
I bought my 97 in 1998 and still drive it every day. And still love driving it.

Coming up on 328,000 miles. Original engine, tranny, new dash. Replaced all the plastic dash parts with a used under dash I found on e-bay and a new top from LMC Truck.
I had the rear diff gears replaced last year.

When you say you “replaced the wire”... did you put a new wiring harness in? That’s something I’m seeing as a concern... brittle wire insulation.

Long live the Gen 2! Best body style in my opinion!!

I have a 99 1500, 318, 46RE (with huge aftermarket trans cooler) and 3.55 rear end. I've gone between Castrol and Mobile 1, both full synthetic oils. Never had an engine issue. Approaching 165,000 miles. But it struggles pulling my 4K camper, planning upgrading the rear diff to a 4.56 and all new bearing this spring.

I was always fond of the 2nd gen rams, my dad bought a 95 new and had it for nearly 20 years I think when the 'ole cancer bug finally did it in. I hate living so far north with the salt.

Caulk04: Yes! I fully understand what you mean. I've owned two cars from the east coast and they were rust buckets. You couldn't hardly work on anything on the chassis without a saw or a air chisel. It's amazing what the salt does.

Our Jan 10, 2021 Snow Storm This is a pretty rare event here. Enjoy the winter wonderland!

Love it! I, too, am the original owner of my '99 Sport. Ordered her in Oct '98.
Nothing rebuilt. Annual tune ups, fluid changes, etc.
201k, it's been up and down the East Coast multiple times. Runs better than my friends' vehicles.
People who haven't seen me in a while can't believe I still have her!
She will carry my casket to my grave.

Hey that’s a neat idea that I think I will put in my will! Carried to the cemetery in the back of The Dodge![emoji16]

The Dodge is entered in March TOTM!
Voting has not opened yet but should any day now. There are some beautiful trucks in the running-but nothing as classy as my awesome Gen 2!
