Tuning is different from 08 to 17. Ecm, tcm, bcm everything is different.
Gawd, all that and so much more lol
I have a 2008 truck with a 5.7 and would like to know if it's possible to swap the long block and the transmission into my truck if it came from a 2017 with the exact same size engine. Is there any difference between the two engines outside of some of the externals that bolt up to the long block itself?
Possible yes, but you definitely won't be doing yourself any favors. So you have a better chance of pulling this off successfully than say an 02-05 because you already have CAN bus, but your existing network isn't equipped for VVT; that part is already been solved using a modified harness and PCM (though you may lose some functionality, like cruise control). What's gonna throw a serious monkey wrench in the works are the $1000 (plus trans tuning) ZF retrofit harness, dial or console shifter (have fun with that lol) and the custom driveshaft you'll need to mate a trans without a slip yoke capability to your rear axle; if you have a 4x4, the last part will be easier on you since all you need to do is to get the transfer case to bolt to the back of the trans.
Then there's the engine itself. Only thing the 03-08 5.7 and the 09+ have in common is the bolt pattern and displacement. Block, crank, cylinder heads, intake manifold, etc etc are totally different and for the most part not backwards compatible. The 2009+ front accessory drive is COMPLETELY different than the 03-08 version. You would have to convert to the newer version, which means running extra wiring, A/C hoses, etc.
The cost of doing this will add up quickly, and that's if you were able to do the work yourself; exponentially if you have to farm it out beyond stuff like harness alteration, PCM flashing and driveshaft fabrication.
So how much money ya got, and was this a curiosity question or was there an actual driving reason behind it?
