Is this normal for HD brakes?

I just rolled 5k miles on my 2500 CTD yesterday and I've heard the brakes squealing a little bit here and there and I already have a pretty healthy coating of brake dust on my front wheels. I know it's a heavy beast but I'm still a bit surprised to see this within 5k miles, is it normal?

Are there recommended upgrades as far as brakes go for the HD trucks? I have larger tires than stock but I don't think they weigh all that much more than the stock wheels & tires.

Mine have squealed a bit since new, especially if parked wet or sitting for a couple days. 78K miles, and nowhere near new brakes.

My '05 3500 brakes never made a sound. My current '15 2500 will intermittently squeal a bit. The pads are wearing like iron, so I am not complaining.

Have never heard a peep out of my 2016 brakes after 37K miles and they are wearing very well with minimal dust. Running over sized tires as also.

With that said I had a 2018 1500 rental a couple weeks ago and that thing was squealing like a hyena, drove me crazy.

i had issues with my truck randomly squeaking as well and i looked into it. the front pads are semi-metallic and the rears are ceramic. hence the dust and squeaks. when i change the front brakes it will get ceramic pads as well. i have aftermarket wheels that are pretty open and it sucks to clean off the brake dust every few days or so just to keep them looking nice.

mine squeak and squeal front and rear. just had to replace the front pads and rotors at 48,000 had a stuck caliper and burned through the pads on the driver side.

I have had intermittent squeeling issues with my brakes in the past with barely 20k miles. Slight braking would cause a very annoying squeel, which would go away with heavy braking. Through researching on the net, I have come to the conclusion it is a very common issue without much of a cure (except maybe new/different parts).

Mine did the same, got to the point that it was excruciating. I bought some nice high heat synthetic brake pad grease, took the brakes apart, cleaned and greased the pads. Noise almost completely went away.

Did the grease go on the back of the pads?

Like bobbo said, you put a thin film of lubricant on the back of the pads, a little bit on the "ears" of the pad (where it fits into the caliper) and on the bolts/pins that hold the calipers and brackets.

That helps reduce the amount of friction between the pads and brackets, which reduces the squeaking. Regular pad lubricant will get too runny with racing or HD applications, so make sure you get a high heat synthetic lubricant. I used Permatex synthetic ceramic extreme, its rated to 3000 degrees before it starts to melt.

Like I said, immediate reduction in noise. Took about an hour and a half to jack up the front wheels, take the pads off, spread the calipers and lube the pads. I just did the fronts, as that was where 95% of the noise originated.
