I removed my exhaust tips on my Magnaflow 16869, and dropped them off for powder coating. When I say tips, I mean the huge (approx) 18" long x 5" diameter tips and about 2 more feet of pipe.

1. It surprised me how much of the sound of the exhaust was in the tips. The exhaust almost sounds like stock now.

2. It could be my imagination, but my truck seemed to be a little more responsive without the tips on.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?? Are there any good reasons for the above observations??

BTW, the powder coating is going to take a few days. I didn't want to drive around with the exhaust melting the wheel well liner or making a mess, so I slapped some "custom" parts on from AutoZone! Overkill? Yep that's me. :)

Check it out:

It's the 1960 magna phone effect... It's not nearly as loud.

I just went and started the truck cold, and it sounds pretty much like stock with out the tips on... Maybe I am clueless, but I sure am suprised that 90% of the sound is in the tips.

One more question, by adding the elbows pipes, is there any chance I added some back pressure??? And could this be why the truck seems a little more resposive in the lower end (I just drove it around town)???

Magnaphone! Haha, I love it! I spent all this money to put a magnaphone on my truck?!?!? My next mod will be to put an actual 1960s magnaphone on it! The hippie chicks will be all over me! All stoned and smelling like incense, with some long floral dresses and sandles, and hair that hasn't been washed in a while... ;)

Seriously? All the sound is from the freakin tip?

How do you like my temporary "custom" exhaust?! Lol

Not to thread jack myself, but do you mind checking my House of graphics thread and giving me your professional opinion??

In other news, "Magnaflow exhaust sounds like stock with the tips off..."

My 07 has exhaust dumped in front of axle and has a 22'' Magnaflow, and it is quieter than my 12 with a 24'' Magnaflow with the factory tips out the rear. From inside and outside of the trucks. It is very strange huh

That is strange... it should be the other way around.
Up until today, I thought most of my exhaust note came from the muffler, but now I know the tip does most of the work. Cool, learned something new. :)

Yeah I thought the same thing. My 12 truck has def gotten louder over the past few months. And the 07 is a quad cab, too, so it ought to be quite a bit louder but noooooooope.

I liked the exhaust turned down in front of the rear axle on old street rods.

I like out the side exhaust too, but I was talking like headers to about 4 feet of pipe to turn downs at the rear axle.

This may come as a shock to some...

but a muffler muffles the sound
An echo chamber will create an echo

:Moon:

But seriously, a tip that is larger in diameter than the pipe it is will indeed amplify the noise.

Shocking!!! Lol!

I just didn't think I would loose the deep rumble with the tips off. I understand that a muffler, muffles the sound. But I thought the majority of the exhaust note (not referring to the volume of sound), came from the muffler...

Regardless :hitit: ---> :boobs:
