I’d pass. Going older and you never know what kind of abuse has been done to a used HD. The 1500 with 8 speed is a powerful truck for towing. If you were looking at a used 6.4 then I’d say maybe. The only benefit you’d get out of that 2012 is stability.

He would need to be looking at a 2016 or newer to get the 6.4 Hemi, I have a 2016 Ram 2500 4x4 with the 6.4 Hemi and it is a very nice truck and engine combination.

I did not want all the bells and whistles so I bought a Tradesman with the chrome package and it is a very nice truck even in the Tradesman model.

I did a thread with three videos about different things on the truck in another thread I posted in this section.

Welcome RaceHillFarms! I enjoyed reading some of your posts on the other forum and then one day you just disappeared. Glad to see you're back. This is a great forum with tons of traffic compared to the other one. Glad you could join us.

2014 or newer for 6.4.

Op- What part of towing ur current trailer do you have issues with? Does it feel unstable?, Not enough stoping power? Not enough pulling power? Just because people on here may make comments like “ Ur 5.7 8 speed has plenty of power” that may not be the case for your situation. Tell us what the current negatives are, what you are looking for as far as improvement/ Do you ever plan to upgrade the trailer? I can’t speak to the 2012 5.7 2500.. but I can speak to the 14 6.4 2500, while it’s power numbers are not much over the 5.7 and the 8 speed you currently have with 3:92”s will pull that trailer way faster than a stock 12/5.7/2500- the 2500 will feel way more stable and stop a little better. But give us some more info. How much do they want for the 2500 you are looking at?

I had a 2013 Ram 1500 and bought a 6200 tag trailer. It was ok, but sometime a tad unstable. I borrowed a friends 2500 with the 5.7 and towed about 10 miles....I was immediately sold. The 2500 is a beast for towing...more stable and solid feeling, held the road better, and even eliminated some of the sway. I bought one a few days later. I wanted the 6.4L, but the one I bought had the 5.7L. That motor did everything I needed....probably ok up to 7-8000 pounds, and it did spin around 3500-4500 rpms going up steep hills, but we towed for three years with it and never had an issue....
