USAF 1970-1974 F4 Phantom

So that big old fuel guzzler wasn't a figment of my imagination. I was at Langley from 68 to 72. Before I moved off base my barracks was at the very end of the runway. It was a real trip being in the latrine when they took off and rattled the stall doors and walls. I have been back for several air shows in recent years and could not believe that there is never an F4 there. All used as target drones I guess.

We were assigned to NATO, to assist a Greek Army Artillery Battalion. This was back before the US Military's lease expired in 1999.

Greece in itself is a beautiful country.

Upon entering the country, when you land at the airport in Athens, we debarked the aircraft at the end of the runway, and the first thing that caught my eye was the machinegun armed guards on the roof of the terminal, and you ride a bus to the terminal. Inside the terminal, after you go through customs, a military liason picks you up, and takes you to a local hotel, where you stay for your first 2 weeks in country. During that first 2 weeks, you go through a crash course in speaking and understanding the language, and their customs, and then what your mission is in relation to NATO. After that initial 2 weeks we're sent to a detachment elsewhere in country. Mine was located just outside of a village called Yannitsa, in northern Greece, about 40 clicks west of Thessloniki, and about a stones throw south of Macedonia.

I enjoyed my time there, and as in any country there are political parties, you learn who's who in the 2 week orientation. At the time, there was the Nationalist Party, which liked the American presence, and did everything to make us feel welcome. The Socialist Party, that tolerated our presence, but were indifferent about us being there, and the Communist Party, which didn't want us there at all.

What I can say is Greece's financial problems started when they let the lease lapse in '99, and the entire US Military pulled out of country.

I was in Greece in 98 and there was a group burning the American Flag. Talk about a bunch of pissed off Marines. Of course we couldn't do anything about it. The headlines back home wouldn't look too good.

True. There were a couple Air Force Radiomen assigned to our detachment, and one of them was rotating out in a week. So the night before he was scheduled to leave, we had a little going away party for him at one of the other guys apartment off post. He left the party around 11pm, and we were all drinking pretty good that night. Well the next day happened to be the Greek Independence Day, and all the shops in the village were displaying the Greek flag. He thought it would be a good idea to snatch one as a memento of his time in Greece. Unfortunate for him, a Greek national saw him steal it, called the local police, and they showed up at the Detachment the next morning and hauled him off in handcuffs. Instead of heading stateside that day, the locals tried and convicted him in a week, and he spent the next 2 years in a workcamp.

It was fun being stationed in Hawaii and having served in a consolidated DFAC. Working with other units other than just my own broke up the monotony. But man, that afternoon Hawaiian sun sucked when I was on 1st shift.. had to do PT in the afternoon on those days and let's just say it wasn't a walk in the park.

The only place PT is a walk in the park is in the Air Force----LOL
Jay

Yeah, no kidding! I had a few high school besties who joined the AF instead and man I swear, you should have seen their faces when we compared Basic notes. LOL! They were aghast at what I was put through and I was like "how does walking indoors on a treadmill even count as physical training?!"

HEY!! It was NOT a walk in the park! It was a ride on a stationary bicycle. Get it right!! :bleh:

When I went through basic, it was push-ups, sit-ups and a mile and a half run. Nowadays, I believe it's back to the same thing. But for 12-14 years, the bicycle "stress test" was it. Sad that for the most part, out of shape people did better on it that fit people.

Chin ups, sit ups and a 3 mile run for us. Don't know if that's still the case.

A Soldier, Navel Officer, and Marine were stranded on an island after surviving a Helicopter crash. They were suddenly surrounded by a tribe of Cannibals. The Cannibal Chief said to them, "We are going to kill you eat your flesh and use your skin to make a Canoe. I will grant you all 1 last request." The Solider asked for a loaded gun and blew his brains out. The Naval Officer asked for a Poison Pill that will kill him quickly and painless. The Marine asked for a Fork. The Chief looked at him confused but granted his request. The Marine then suddenly started stabbing himself all over his body. The Chief asked him "What the Hell are you doing?" The Marine replied, "**** your Canoe!"
