I just got my first oil change at a local people boys. I told them I wanted full synthetic Mobil 1 oil. After the oil change I saw on the receipt they used 0-20 instead of 5-20 as the manual recommends. I live in NH so I understand the 0 will work better in the extreme cold we get.

Am I ok?

Some dealers are using 0/20 in everything specing a 5/20. If it was mine I wouldn't have it, that's just me.

Mobil recommends 0W-20 in 5W-20 applications. I would not sweat it.

Mobil 1™ 0W-20 is an advanced full synthetic engine oil designed to help deliver outstanding engine protection and enhanced fuel economy. Mobil 1 0W-20 meets or exceeds the requirements of various vehicle manufacturers and industry standards and outperforms conventional oils. Mobil 1 0W-20 is recommended for SAE 0W-20 and 5W-20 applications.

Back when mobil 1 first came out with that 0-20, I didn’t trust it so I never used it. I figured that since both my little Stratus at the time and my little Dakota had 5-20 printed on the oil filler caps that that was they were gonna get.

Just for information.
Mobil-1 does not state anywhere on the container that it meets Chrysler spec MS-6395 called out in the owner's manual.

Steve

If Valvoline conventional meets it, I am certain Mobil 1 would if they applied for it. Mobil has had a strained relationship with FCA since the bankruptcy in 2008 when they stop extending product on credit for factory fill and demanded payment upfront before delivering product. With Fiat coming in and having a relationship already with Pennzoil/Shell, Mobil has not really cared that much on if or when they get all their oils the various FCA certifications. I will wager a bet one would be hard pressed to find a warranty denial for using Mobil 1 for the sole reason it did not have the MS-6395 certification.

I’m pretty sure it would pass if they’d just let it and do the test to make them happy. I’d really almost rather just use Mobil 1 because it’s all I’ve ever used without issue but if this Pennzoil stuff is much better than it was years and years ago, I guess I can adjust.

As far as taking that bet on taking that kind of chance with your warranty coverage possibly being in jeopardy by using an oil that’s not MS-6395 certified; you may be extremely right but that’s just simply a bet that I wouldn’t care to take so, no more Mobil 1 for me.

But since were on the subject, what oil brands out there are MS-6395 compliant other than Pennzoil?

RL 5-20 says something about the spec on it's webpage but unclear if it is approved.

Ravenol makes at least one oil that is approved.

That's the falisy of ms6395, other than a 2 year test there is no info on what that spec actually means. Then you have all these oil companies that use words like " approved" " meets or exceeds", " recommended for" . Pretty much any 5/20 has language relating to ms6395 on their website, some also have their 5/30's on there. Mobile super syn meets ms6385 according to their website. I find it hard to believe that super syn would meet the spec but M1 not, JMO.

Someone on bitog posted a few pages that were supposedly the ms6395 spec. If accurate, they are a subset of SN iirc, might have even been SM at the time.

So any API-SN oil should meet the spec, but then it comes down to paying for the right to print it on the bottle.
