Dang! I just read all ten pages on this thread and not one of you guys that has the tailgate posted any pictures!

I tried copying a youtube video on the tailgate but for some reason it would not work ... Just go to youtube and there are quite a few videos on how the gate functions ...

I'm getting ready to order a '21 limited. What are your thoughts on the split tailgate? Gimmick or real functionality?d

Going in tomorrow to talk to the dealer and spec it out. I'll post the build once I get it on paper.

Also, no Uconnect 5 for '21's :-(

All you need to do after seeing it is more convenient is to decide if the extra cost is worth the extra cost to you personally.

The only way to know if you'll like it is to demo one. Find a local dealer who has a truck in stock with one and try it out. Then decide for yourself if it's worth the extra $$. For us it was, and I'll make sure my next truck has it too.

I don't know, I haven't had to haul anything yet that required me to have the tailgate down ...
Interesting, if you ever do let me know!

Looking to purchase my first Ram and having a tough time deciding between the Ram boxes or multi-function tailgate. I do not plan to do both...Thoughts/recommendations?
RamBoxes are great for small stuff. Sunscreen, bug spray, jackets, bottles of water, tools, travel games, light sabers...
Bags with sport stuff tend to just get tossed infront of where my kid sits, more than enough leg room for now.
Bed is great for bigger stuff, so if that's more your speed the tailgate may be a strong option.
I had a truck with the full 6'4" bed. I can't say I miss the width over the length, and I'm easily able to work around both.

So just throwing it out there...has anyone just bought one and install it?

My personal biggest headache is picking between the panoramic sunroof or the rambox. Pricong isn't too bad for the fancy tailgate. Only because if I cant find what I want, I might order the truck...and possibly get the tailgate down the road...in a year or two.

From my research, adding the MFT is difficult to do on a rambox bed, and more difficult on a non-rambox bed because of the extra bracing that's required. Parts availability being a big part of the problem. You can't buy a complete MFT from Mopar at this time. So you'll have to order all the components and assemble it yourself (or pay someone to do it). Should be easier to do in the future if you opt for salvage yard parts. But I have yet to see that someone has successfully done this.

I will periodically load 60 to 80 lb bags of concrete into the bed of my truck and a MFT would be nice to have. But when I did the Ram 1500 build I saw that it added $3400 to the MSRP with the two added groups mandated by Ram to get the tailgate. I can afford to be screwed but I prefer not to and to vote my displeasure with my pocketbook.

Yeah, it's unfortunate they make you select other options if you want the MFT. For me it would have been just the cost of the MFT since I was already opting for one of the required groups. I just didn't know enough about it at the time or I would have gotten it.

I read an article a while back that said it would be cost prohibitive.

From Car and Driver article...

Ram says it's possible to retrofit the new tailgate to an existing 2019 1500 truck, but because it would require replacing the box in addition to the tailgate, it's an impractical proposition likely to cost several thousand dollars (stand-alone beds for the old Ram cost upward of $4000). Pickups with the new tailgate option will be available at dealerships starting in late spring 2019.

That's the official statement from FCA. Makes sense for them to say that so people will trade in their existing trucks for one with the MFT if they want it badly enough. We own two 2020 Ram 1500's (Laramie and Limited), both with the rambox option. I drive the Laramie, and it has a normal tailgate. My better half drives the Limited, and it has the MFT. I have done side by side comparisons on what's different between the two, and the main differences I've found are in the striker and latch area. There is no extra bracing needed for the rambox bed. The only thing holding me back from swapping them is she doesn't want me to try it until the Limited is at least a year old. She's worried I'm going to scratch something LOL. She may have a point there.

Do not shoot the messenger,

I am only reporting what I have read on multiple fronts. Maybe the RAMBOX bed is setup for it from the factory? I have a RAMBOX bed and it is beefy.

I guess we shall see as the next gen modders come alive
