I'm getting ready to order a '21 limited. What are your thoughts on the split tailgate? Gimmick or real functionality?d

Going in tomorrow to talk to the dealer and spec it out. I'll post the build once I get it on paper.

Also, no Uconnect 5 for '21's :-(

I bought a 2020 Longhorn in February and have the split tailgate and I love it ... No more leaning over the gate to put stuff in the bed ... The only problem I've had with it is making sure it is closed .. It seems like it is, but the dash light shows at times that it is still ajar ... I give it a good slam to close it and it seems to do the trick ... Maybe because it's still new and needs a little breaking in period since I haven't used the truck much during this covid issue ... The third brake light comes on when the tailgate is open, and if it goes off within a second or two after closing the gate I know it's secure ...

I see no advantage in the "split" tailgate. I would have much preferred a step up option (like Ford or GM) even though that feature is useless with trailer attached. As we get older, crawling in and out of the bed becomes more challenging...

I gotta say, opening the split, then reaching in seems like it would be much easier, also if one still needs to get in the bed, open the split, step on the bumper and you are in.

I will be adding this to my next truck for sure.

Just use the step incorporated into the bumper, leave the small side of the gate closed and use it as a handle, and in you go ... easy peasy ...

@tomb... sounds like the dealer you were working with is trying to rip you off. When I bought my truck I looked at another that had the multifunction tailgate but none of the other stuff you stated, only $995 for the multi function tailgate.

There is a minimal trim level package that must be added that's why his price was so high. But I looked and that package is something most of the people are going to get anyway. If you want a bare bones stripped down truck but add the tailgate it forces you to add the package which drives the cost up. Most people will have that package anyway so it's $995 at that point.

I cannot argue how you feel but if you open the split tailgate you use the bumper as the step. The portion of the bumper that dips down is about the same height as the Ford step. Just sayin.

Installing a Bedslide or DECKED Truck Bed Tool Box would work for me if getting to mid section of the truck bed is that important. Both work with a bed cover too for those of us that want extra dry hauling space. A bed or tonneau cover also means you aren't shoveling mulch or rocks. I also like the extra extension of the drop down tailgate for a work area or sitting down as it keeps me from hitting my shins on the tow hitch. Sitting in the bed you lose side to side space for working on long objects. just my 2 cents.

it's convenient not having to lean over the dropped tailgate to get into the bed.[/QUOTE]

I told my wife that very same thing! She said we needed new furniture! ;)

There is always going to be those people that are anti-everything. They would still be using manual roll up windows just to prove a point. (whatever point that is?). And by the way, I've had more manual windows come off the track or handles break then I have ever had issues with power windows in my 40+ years of owning vehicles.
.

I agree. I bet a large percentage of the "status-quoers" are also the 5th Gen haters and the gear shift knob haters, etc.... Change is good people - embrace it. Or would you still rather be walking around with a mullet? (Actually, I'm betting there are a few on here who still do...) he he

I'm old enough to remember the battleship sized Buick station wagons with the tailgate that was operated electrically by the key adjacent to the tailgate.... and when the key was turned, the tailgate disappeared downward into an abyss! ;)

I remember riding in the back of one...you know, in the days when people didn't need to be wrapped in bubble-wrap. My cousin and I had our own little play area. I know, I know it was dangerous looking back - but I came through relatively unharmed.

And the window would disappear into the roof!

I had a 2015 Ford with the step and liked it but this split tailgate is much better. Open it sideways and it’s really easy to step up in. Still can open normal and sit on tailgate or put weight on it like a regular tailgate. As I get older I prefer the split over the Ford step. Really easy to reach into the bed and step up onto it with split open.

Wow, those racks are nice! Actually saw a Ram this weekend with a Kayak hung on each side and a top box. Nice setup. Be nice if they had a canvas cover that went over that bar setup also.
The lower height bars are for a tent mounted on top. They have mounts for the sides to put traction boards and gas cans. I’m not going to use mine for that given the Ram boxes can open fully without accessories on the sides.

My 2020 Limited has the MFT. By design, massive cast angle brackets are added to the front corners of the truck bed to stiffen the bed due to the extra stress on alignment of the MFT. Some owners simply remove these Heavy 90 degree brackets to install aftermarket Tonnau covers. This would weaken the stiffness of the truck bed. Rightonbracket.com/product/ram-truck-bed-brackets/ has manufactured replacement brackets so that aftermarket covers could be installed. I still had to modify the rails on my cover but feel good that I maintained the needed stiffness in my truck bed. I don't know how the OEM Cover goes on but if the original brackes are removed, it weakens the truck bed.

If you are going to put a one piece hard lid on that bed you cant have a split gate. That's why I stayed with the regular once piece gate. If you like those accordian type flip lids it may be ok.
