Obviously, the 5.9 is an excellent engine that has proven itself over the years. The 6.7 is also excellent, but it is saddled with crappy emissions equipment. Once this is deleted, it's as good as the 5.9, at least in my opinion. Also, I think that most everyone agrees that the new 6 speed auto tranny is Dodge's best version to date.

i've been doing some research and it looks like on a stock trans if I upgrade the torque converter and valve body i'd be good for maybe 150 horse over on the tranny with no problems? correct me if I'm wrong...
The problems you will run into with the 68RFE after adding power, is related to the overdrive clutches in 5th and 6th gear. Thats usually the culprit when the tranny lets go. If you just replace the tq converter, you will be back in there to finish the job sooner than later.
Look into suncoast, ATS, or the route im going Revmax for a properly built transmission. For 550hp expect about 6K, for more power it's closer to 8K.

I agree.... remove the emission stuff and its a stout solid beast.

when did they offer the 6 auto? did that come out same time as the 6.7?
Yes indeed.

I've never owned a 5.9, but I hear a lot of people that had a 5.9, then upgraded to the 6.7 love them. The problem with the early 6.7 was mostly due to the emission stuff and turbos. A lot of people solved that by getting rid of the EGR and DPF stuff.

Oh and if it helps, I run the Hot 175hp tune on my truck daily. I don't tow much currently (4500lbs) but even then I still run the Hot tune. But you have to be smart with your driving. Every stop light isn't a drag strip, let the truck do one complete heat cycle before pushing it... (my tuner is set to stock tuning until the truck reaches 180 degree's).
