I am looking to pick up a new Dodge 2500

I am looking for some information on the hemi and the diesel. I know the diesel has 400 more ft/lbs of torque than the gas engine but is the diesel worth the difference? I am showing about $7500 for the diesel over the gas engine. What is the consensus of the professionals?

Thanks guys

Uses

I will mostly use it for driving to and from work or around town, it will be the family second vehicle. Occasionally it will be used for transporting my antique vehicle housed inside a covered car trailer or boat transport.

I'd say diesel all they way. Personally I will never go back to gas, The fuel mileage alone is worth it. After its modded you also cant beat the power.... if your into that sort of thing. However for every day driving even with a ton of money into suspension i'd say the gasser rides better than a heavy duty truck

whats your commute to work like? how long? how heavy of a boat and car trailer are you talking about and how often would you be towing it?

What all the questions are leading to is if you aren't pulling more then the Hemi is rated for and as long as you aren't going over payload weight and don't tow very often, the hemi will do just fine. If you're going to tow near max towing capability and if you're going to do it often then get the Cummins. It will be worth it's weight in gold and will far outlast the gas engine.

15 minutes to work, 12 person cruiser boat, and just a covered single vehicle car trailer. I believe for my needs the Hemi is the way to go, shouldn't be too much work on the engine. It will be bought mainly for a backup second family vehicle, other vehicles cost as much as a 2500 and I would like to get the most for my money. I plan on keeping it and it should be able to do all the work i would ever need out of a truck.

yea, i would say hemi. if your not towing often, your fuel savings will not make up the cost of the diesel. plus the cummins needs a good highway run once a week to regen.

I went through the same issues last month....looked at diesels and opted for the hemi. I tow 8000 poinds about five times a year and use the truck for a daily driver....not enough for the cost and maintenance of a diesel.

People will say that the diesel resale is better, but that is not entirely true. For example, I bought a ford truck years ago with a five speed manual. When I went to trade it in, the dealer said they could give me $800 more it it was an automatic. I told him it was ok because I saved $1000 by not buying the automatic.

Same with a diesel....$8000 up front cost, $4000-$5000 more on trade depending on mileage....so much for the great trade in....

Some folks just want a diesel....i had ONE...TOO MUCH MAINTENANCE, wife comp, ained about the smell in the garage, fuel gelled in the winter, froze in the winter if I forgot to plug the rhing i , and not a good daily driver....short trips in the cold are hard on them...

I bought the Hemi knowing that it will spin 4000 rpms up a hill, but it is only five times a year, so I can live with it.

Good luck....
