Question for all the alpha users. I’m getting ready to do a Kenwood 10” floating screen install on my 2016 ram 3500. I have previously installed a pioneer 4600 a few years ago using idata link maestro rr. My earlier pioneer was not curtailed to an 8.4 system but instead the older 5” no frills unit. I’ve not yet dabbled with running an alpha to change settings but have read quite extensively about it. Question-could I change certain settings to enable 8.4 features via alpha prior to new Kenwood hu install enabling it to recognize all the features the 8.4 has to offer? I am tired of my current setup dropping air play randomly and other poor performance issues henceforth leading me into the new head unit project. Also using a new idata link rr2 as the go between. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

There aren't that many "options" that AlfaOBD enables that show up on the radio screen.

I would suggest installing the radio 1st and then options, as most of those options are done thru the BCM then the BCM and radio sync up for the stuff to display. (sync up times vary greatly between vehicles. Mine is almost instantaneous, and my neighbor's truck sometimes takes days)

Steering wheel controls should be plug and play. No programming necessary. What features are you trying to add?

HVAC touch screen capability & front to rear fader -as for steering wheel control- installed a limited wheel but current setup isn’t working.

Was the wheel heated? If so it may require the proper clockspring to work (I'd think the steering wheel controls would work though). The HVAC options should show up without any changes with the proper aftermarket integration.

Yes; the new wheel is a heated, I was planning to do that mod at some point but for now I was just hoping the wheel control would work. I’m thinking that the programming of the maestro is the real issue due to it being setup to a vehicle configuration of a non steering wheel volume controlled vehicle

You’ve got me thinking. If I have a clock spring going bad and I have to replace it; I should probably just contact m2m -have a harness made up to go ahead and do the heated wheel function. Could it be bad switches in the wheel itself? I’m really not leaning in that direction due to the the cruise control and gauge cluster related switches working

The wires for the audio controls are very small gauge and easily broken but I doubt anyone has been inside that wheel since it has all the features already. If you have a factory radio still I'd be interested to see if it works on that. If so then you've narrowed down the culprit considerably...

There are 3 or 4 places in the BCM program that interfaces with the heated wheel.

Arcwelder, I can send you a copy of my BCM programming and you can look thru it and see if anything in there jumps out at you that may work.

PS: My '16 Sport does have heated wheel, dual zone HVAC, which do work.

There was also a recall on the '16 clockspring. Mine had the recall done. Look up your VIN number to see if any recalls are still open.

Does the Maestro have updatable firmware? if so, it may need to be flashed. You wouldn't be the 1st I have read that the Maestro was problematic.

Thank you very much! I’ll certainly look into this. As far as recalls… I’m at the point where I will never again deal with recalls due to their handling of certain issues concerning my truck. When things are broken I fix them and in the meantime I try to improve other things…

Little update- tackled the install last night. Mostly good. HU installed and mostly functional with exception of some onerous cameras and certain functions not working but I’ll pull the unit and readjust accordingly. Steering wheel functions work due to the maestro rr2 being configured correctly and for the most part all is well. The unit itself is very impressive. I think I’m a Kenwood fan now.

It’s all done and everything works
Glad to hear it, I don't think you can go wrong with Kenwood. I put just dash speakers from them on my wife's Pacifica and it sounds better than a factory Alpine system IMO...

I also installed front and back cams that are hd -they are by far the best quality cams I’ve had so far. It really sounds great as well. Way better than the previous pioneer unit I had before.
