I need a new PCM for my 2017 Ram 5.7 1500. What are my options? I don’t have the equipment to code/flash/train anything myself. Do I need to just take it to dealer?

There are plenty of aftermarket options to get a stock PCM.

If you're current PCM is still operational the software can be copied and flashed to the new PCM by the aftermarket companies.

If it is not currently operational then you will need a new PCM and you will need a dealer to flash the new software based on your VIN or you will need a good, quality independent Mopar shop with Tech Authority to flash the latest software.

Do I need to have the software copied to the new PCM? I’m seeing some vendors that just require you to give them the VIN when ordering?

Yes, you will either need to have a dealer flash the latest software or send your old PCM to the vendor you are buying from and have them copy the software.

The reason they are asking for the Vaisn is so that the VIN can be programmed to the new PCM.

What is wrong with the current PCM? Are you unlocking the PCM so you can use a tuning platform like HP Tuners?

The vendors are saying “plug and play” and no need to send current PCM in. Just vin and part number. So that’s what’s confusing. I am just replacing a PCM that has something messed up with the feed to cylinder 2 coil.

If the aftermarket company is saying it is a plug-n-play unit then they are flashing the software and programming your VIN and hopefully the mileage too.

Have you confirmed there is an issue with the #2 coil driver in the PCM?

What diagnostic steps have you performed to make the determination that the PCM is the issue?

I'm just curious and by no means am I doubting or questioning your skills. I am a dealer tech with 27 years of experience with Ma' Mopar so when I read about a problem I am always interested about the diag.

Are you getting a #2 ionization code? Are you getting a misfire code or an actual cylinder misfire?
