They offer this in Canada, not sure about the US but for a small fee the dealer offered paint protection before you buy your vehicle. Its a clear coat finish. I decided to go for it, Just wondering if maybe this was a waste of money or a good idea? I also had the interior protection done. They spray something? that prevents liquids from soaking and repels dirt and protects your leather against cracking and hardening.

One of edmonds.com car buying tips is to never buy that stuff since generally speaking its already done at a factory so you're just paying for something thats already paid for.

I'd never pay for it or recommend it but it's done, so water under the bridge. It will be interesting to hear the durability of the product, if you could keep us updated?

Every car already has many coats of clear coat, what they offer is various types of polymers acrylic and or other types. I was a detailer for years, the only ones that make sense are some of the under coatings. However, with a 40 dollar ramp and some spray oils pick your brand(google truck under coatings), you can do a better job cheaper and do it every year if you live in snow area. As for the paint protection, go get you a sealant like Zaino z2pro or duragloss and you will get the same thing the dealer is putting on your truck for 20 bucks.

Just get a can of scotch guard for interiors, same thing put on once a year your good.

When I was a kid my family owned a car dealership.
The add ons were the way we made extra money.
No surprise.
I won't mention what franchises we sold, but back then the gimmick was something similar to what you are mentioning.
It was called Polyglycote.
What a rip.
It cost about $100 back then.
It came in a tube and took about 15 minutes to apply.
The selling point was a 10 year rust guarantee.
The guarantee said, if you read the fine print, that if your car developed any rust spots within 10 years the dealer had to reapply the product for free. LOL
We never pushed it on anyone, but offered it and let the customer read the brochure with the guarantee.
Amazing how many people bought it.

Let the buyer beware.

I did because they will do it once a year for me for free for 5 years and it makes the paint so slippery and shinny

Also did the underbody protection.

$ 500, not for me. I'll use a sealant on the clear coat and scotch guard the inside myself.

A typical factory painted vehicle will have approximately 20-40 microns of clear coat.

Factory paint is applied as one coat, but may be made up of two or three immediately sequential passes without letting the prior pass dry (i.e. "one coat").

paint sealant is nothing more than a polymer-based car "WAX"

We also went with the extended paint and interior protection plan and they have buffed out rail rust 2 different times and glad that the wife made me go with it cause I have taken my truck in twice and they have buffed it out making it look like new. It's crazy seeing how much **** these trucks are coming with from the factory and about to say f@&k a wRranty and just redoe my truck

Wife twisted my arm forcing me to buy a Teflon coating for our new rv, paid $800, when we picked it up you could see the swirl marks from where their kids slopped over onto the black trim. Also came with a maintaince kit, Nothing But WAX. After researching after the fact it appears that the majority of these add ons are nothing but snake oil, and dealers profits.

Don't feel bad I don't, and I am sure there are a lot of others not admitting they were also taken by a hard sell.

I knew someone who got a paint sealant at a dealership back in 2002. It was a Dupont product, I don't remember what it was called. It was supposed to provide 10 years of paint protection. He ended up paying $250 for it and they told him NOT to wax the vehicle because it would remove the sealant. One month later while he was at work, a bird crapped on the hood sometime in the afternoon. He washed it off when he got home and it had etched into the clearcoat after being on there no longer than a few hours. He brought it to the dealer to show them and their reply was something along the lines of "sorry we cant control what birds eat. Make sure to wash your vehicle more often.". They then proceed to show him what wasn't covered under the paint protection and it was pretty much anything that would actually happen to the average vehicle.

After hearing this I have turned down every paint protection ever offered to me. They offered some sort of paint protection on my Ram for the low low price of $750 that supposedly covered "any paint damage". I promptly told them no thanks.

I've always had good luck with Mother's hard paste carnauba wax to keep my paint lookin' good.

Salesman tried to hit me up with this paint protection as well.

Almost forgot, he tried to sell me some kind of windshield sealant as well. Supposed to make snow, ice, bird crap not stick as much.

Should have asked if they had any Bull Crap protectants.

Hahaha I love reading about these add-ons.
When we bought our truck and trailer, I told the sales manager if he made me listen to the pitch about paint protection and undercoating, etc I wouldn't sign the deal. It absolutely puts me in a rage.
