Hey guys, I'm gonna be going to autozone tonight to pick up some color match paint to do the outside of my grille. Like what Schroeder has. Gonna paint the outside and herculine the inside. Just wondering what all I need to buy.

I don't know anything about primers or clear coats, so if someone can give me a list of what I need to buy I'd really appreciate it!!

I'm assuming from your sig pic that you don't have a chrome grill. In that case you are going to want some 600 grit wet sand paper to prepare the surface of the grill. You should be able to paint your color match base coat right over the cured factory paint, no primer needed. Make sure you do a good job sanding (no shinny spots, but don't sand through!). Before you sand make sure you use a wax and grease remover so you don't drive any type of wax or dirt into the finish. After sanding wash with soap and water, dry and wipe down again with a wax and grease remover. Start with a very light coat of base color coat (tack coat), wait a few minutes then apply a medium wet coat, wait 10 minutes and apply a full wet coat (careful not to get runs). You may have full coverage at this point but if not follow with as many coats as needs giving 10 minutes between coats. Once full coverage has been achieved, let the base coat dry for an additional 30-45 minutes before applying 2-3 coats of clear using the same application instructions given above.

So your shopping list,
600 grit wet paper
wax and grease remover
base coat color
clear coat

So you are going to peel the dip and paint the chrome?

If thats the case, peel it, sand the chrome with the wet paper, apply a few coats of primer, then follow original instruction.

Make sure you sand the chrome down very very well. Or paint over the plastidip. Lol. That's been done too.

^^ Yeah, I'm used to sanding down the chrome. Just did both of the bumpers for the Herculining. Just wasn't sure about the Priming and Clear Coat.

I used a pair of pliars or a flat head screwdriver to pop them out by wedgeing between the tab and the grille to push it out.

Mine was also chrome, make sure you really put some work into your prep, especially when using aerosol.

Yeah mine won't look that good lol. But I'm a DIY mood lately. Lovin workin on the truck myself

I agree, DIY mods are the most rewarding.

I did the same mod, I am a shade off and it looks more matte than anything.

But from a distance, it's perfect hahhaha

I did it myself only because I thought it would cost me a pretty penny.

But a hundred bucks really isn't that bad.

Sorry for the temporary thread jack.
