Think this might work? Tape off the rim and most of the steel wheel. Plastidip the tire outside the rim. Remove the tape from the wheel and tape the outside of the tire/panels etc. Paint the rims. Then peel the plastidip off the tires. Your thoughts??

Let air out so you can push in on bead and slip playing cards between tire and rim. I have a deck of cards here that have that as their sole purpose.

Edit: nevermind...see how you're plastidipping them. I was thinking rattle can.

They actually make stuff for doing what you are talking about. I don’t remember what it is called, but sign painters use it. My buddy who does custom painting uses it for doing graphics. Paint it on with a brush and then he just cuts out the graphics. It is translucent.

If I were gonna do this.
I would get a pack of 3x5 index cards and tuck them in between the wheel and tire. Overlap them till ya have a full ring. Paint away!!

^^^^ just cover the tire in plastic, doesn't need to be perfect near the lip and use the index cards. I did some plastidip on my rims with the index cards only and didn't get any over spray. If I were to paint them, I'd probably wrap the tire in plastic for safe measure and then line the lip of the rim with index cards

It peels/rubs off the tire, wouldn’t worry about masking anything but the rotor/caliper behind it.

You could've remove the tires first but since it works for you, I guess it's alright.

Plastidip the overspray is no big deal. I dipped the emblems on my last truck, while you obviously want to avoid overspray whenever possible it comes off pretty easy. Just want to be sure it's masked off enough so that pulling on the overspray plastidip won't mess with the finish of the wheel.
