I am so bummed and should have never looked into this. :(
I would have been so much better off enjoying blissful ignorance.
The truck loaded up, hook up the toyhauler, and off I go.

But noooooo, I had to weigh the truck...
Full tank of gas, camper shell, and only me 6440 lbs. on the Cat Scale.

I put the family in the truck and without a trailer I'm already over the gross of 6900 lbs.
(yeah, yeah... no diet jokes please the boys are 6'4") :D

I know I can pull the small toyhauler as is. The 5.7 hemi is a work horse.

If I decide on a bigger trailer, then I have to get a bigger truck anyway, so it
looks like a 3500 is in my future.

Thanks all

Heck, I'd say hook it up, load it up and go for it. You'll know in the first 10 miles or so if you've over done it. Not that it'll stop you...

I recall my uncle putting an over-cab camper shell, plus trailered boat, plus motorcycle trailer behind the boat on his old Dodge D-50 4 banger. Drove across many state lines that way. Never complained. I bought that D-50 from him later and drove it another 100K miles before giving up on it. Though I never loaded quite that much.

Well, the Corona Virus put a big damper in my plans and trips, but I have learned a lot in the mean time.
I packed up the truck for camping and towing the boat, I went to the scales.
GVWR is maxed without the trailer, so overloaded by whatever tongue weight I put on.
GCVWR with boat still allows me another 3.0K to max out.
If I pull a 6K loaded trailer, I'm still under GCVWR and less than 10% over GVWR.
With the upgraded tires, brakes, and suspension, I'm OK with that until I get a new truck next year.
The 5.7 Hemi is a mule. Power has never been the issue.
If I only learned one thing to pass on... buy the trailer first and then the truck to match :)

Thank all of you for your input and help.

Not exactly correct.

Buy your second trailer first; then the truck.

I've always been the exact opposite - keep your trailer under your truck's max, period.

Of course, I used to own a dually - so it was never an issue until I went to this PW. Now...I'm basically a half-ton.

Just wanted to update...
I broke down and bought a 2018 2500 to stop worrying about overloading.

2017 Limited payload 1068 lbs.
2018 Longhorn payload 2991 lbs.

Just have to get used to that ugly **** brown leather :)

though have no plans on towing an rv so my truck is more than adequate for my use, but I too was uninformed about towing capacity rating until reading some of these forums, I just thought that my truck says it can tow 9800lb but never thought of considering the payload capacity also comes into play. glad I know more now.

My only hassle now is that the 2500 weighs over 6000 lbs.
In NY, it has to be registered "commercial" :( , so no driving on NY Parkways.
Guess who lives next to the Parkway. I just added 4 miles to get home by commercial routes.
I love the 2500, but I think I also screwed myself.
