I'm pushing 200000 on my 98 5.9 v8 the old 1960's 360 v8 cast iron construction. I got the v6 pentastar to replace it. So far I'm driving both but am enjoying the improved gas mileage on the v-6. There have been many stories out there about the problems with the v6 engine in the past, but from what I've read that should all be pretty much corrected by the 2018 model year.

Curious as to your experience with the pentastar's reliability and longevity. How many miles have you logged on yours? What issues arose over that time?

Thanks for any input!

2017, 34,000km (21,000mi).

Engine has shown me P06DE twice while towing.

Other than that, it’s been flawless. 23.5mpg (USgal) commuting

I"ve not heard of many problems at all with the pentastar. What have you heard about their problems?

31k miles (~11k of them I racked up). So far, doing great. :)

(need to schedule an oil change, though - they say 10k miles is fine, but I want to do it every 7500 miles.)

There was a lot of issues way back in the bad old days when the Pentastar design first came out. If I remember right, it had something to do with the cams or cam lifters (forgot which, and likely way wrong...)?

Either way, the engine design is way mature by now - enough that I had no qualms about buying one in a 2017 model :)

The 3.6 was on Wards best list a few times. Not sure what weight that carries nowadays but I’ve read many positive comments about the engine. I’m sure you’ll get many trouble free miles out it.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm glad to hear most issues were with earlier models, because from what I'm hearing these days, that pentastar is darned near bullet proof.

Yes, just google pentastar problems. You tube has a bunch of them, but as we all know, the bad always gets more attention than 'nothing happening' does! I've been very pleased with my 5.9 pushrod cast iron engine in my 98. Just the gas mileage is the issue for me. Reason why I went with the pentastar in the first place. So far so good, I'm seeing better than 25 (as high as 25.9) so far. That's pretty amazing in my book. Just hope reliability is anything close to my 98.
