Just had a conversation with a finishing shop here in my area. I was going to have my OEM Sport exhaust tips powder coated, then was informed of the process. I was quoted $40 for the powder coating, but they would have to be stripped of the chrome first. They said it's a nasty process and they don't do that there.

Anyone else ever run into this? Do I need to call another shop or does this sound normal. I've never heard of such a thing, but never tried to have chrome powder coated either.

I know chrome has to be scuffed or removed for paint to adhere properly but wasn't aware it was the same for powder coating, I've heard of people doing it themselves with sand paper or shops sand blasting it *shrug* Hopefully someone with actual experience with it will chime in.

I have had chrome parts powder coated before and some I sand blasted and others we scuffed up. I have never heard of a shop saying that before. That being said, if there is a concern of the chrome peeling and flaking then it would all need to be removed

Yep just needs to be sand blasted I'm getting my bumpers done this summer. The shop I talked to said its pretty easy process. $40 sounds a little high since a bumper is $125 out the door but it could be different areas.

So after looking into it further you're correct. It's polished stainless so it shouldn't be a problem. Going to call this shop back Monday and see what they quote me.

Just for future info for yourself and others on here, chrome can be powder coated if it's in good condition. Sandblast to removed the shine and give it some etch. If the chrome is peeling, then it would need to be removed, or blasted until it stops flaking and then feathered in. After feathering an epoxy primer is used to seal and fill. Sand then add color topcoat. I coat all kinds of chrome from new to pitted and flaking and never have any issues. I've been doing it for over seven years and it all still looks good.
