I have a stock 2001 Ram 2500 and I want to put 35 inch tires on it and eventually put 37.5s on it. Do I need a lift for the 35s? And how much of a lift would I need for 37.5s? Should I do a body or suspension Also what programmer would you suggest I get to change the gear ratio and what should I change it to?

Some 2500s can run 35s on a level, but you're looking at least a 3 inch lift for 35's. With 37s you're going to need a 5-7 inch lift.

Gears are going to need to be changed to 4.88 gears for the 37s since that's what you're going with later.

As for programmers, SuperChips is the only on that changes for tire size.

The dealer can change tire size also. But if you have changed your gearing u have to let them know so that they input the right gearing also.

Gen II Ram's (I think Gen II forward) get the speedo input off a tone ring on the rear diff.
Gear change does not effect the speedometer.

I would say something in the 6-8" range, a nice long arm setup would be ideal for such large tires. Lift coils and 'longer' arms of a standard lift kit will not control such large rubber very well. It'll sure look pretty, but it won't ride/drive near as well as a proper long arm.

I don't know if they still make it, but my Hypertech was able to adjust for changes in tire size (00 Ram)

7" for clearing 37" and yes a long arm of some type. 5" for 35" is about normal for 2500 v8 gas trucks. 5" is pushing it for long arm clearance it can be done but things need to be cut, as with almost all the long-arm kits out there. In some cases you have to cut the cab mount in others you have to cut off the lower control arm factory brackets, so almost a no going back deal.

I recently installed a used Fabtech short/long arm setup in my truck (just the control arms and brackets), big difference over the two short arms major improvement. So far I am impressed with these parts, well built top grade bolts and hardware.

Some speedometer info

Cp from my notes.

Chassis Diagnostic Manual. There, in section 29A, it explains the procedure needed to program the CAB for specific tire sizes. [The CAB sends a pulse stream to the PCM, which drives the speedo/odo; to change the calibration, the CAB needs to be told, among other things, the number of teeth on the RWAL sense ring and the rev/mi of the installed tires.]

So, if you change your tire size and your dealer hasn't a clue as to correcting the speed/odo, point him to the Chassis Diagnostic Manual, section 29A. It's all there.

NOTE: the 98 1/2 models do not use speedometer gears and the speed metering is taken from the ABS sensors. To change "gears" for different tire sizes requires reprogramming of the PCM. Dealers have been having problems with this procedure, and many axle ratio/tire size combinations are not available.

Not sure why everybody here loves such huge lifts.
Level for 35's (done it personally)
3" or more for 37's (seen it many times)
Depending on wheels of course.

I ran the stock 3.55's with the 35's with absolutely no problems or negatives.

^On a 2nd gen?

Because I know on the 4th gens you can level and run 35's as the wheel wells are deeper

I'll be honest with you, that LOOKS like slightly more than a level, unless you're talking the 3 inch "level" that is fairly common.

To be exact those are 2" leveling coils from Carli performance.

Like I said the front is on a slight incline.

Eh, well. I can't really argue with that. But that is a spring lift, a spacer lift will net you less lift as you're having to contend with old springs.

Here's a flat ground picture. Different wheels and tires but same size and specs.

I had a 6" tuff-country suspension lift on my 98 and ran 37" goodyear wranglers with no rub.

Older picture with a 2.5" HBS leveling kit instead of aftermarket coils.

Yeah 35's cleared my offroad lift just fine, just needed proper wheels. 3.55's with 35's? No thanks 35's and 4.10's sucked couldnt imagine any lower. That is unless you got a cummins, than gears don't mean much aha.

Yes of course. Never understood a gas engine in a 2500 or 3500.
