Camaro Fest

Happy Born On Date!
When one of the journalists at the Camaro’s press release asked “What is a Camaro?” a GM product manager quickly replied: “A small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.”
The Chevrolet Camaro was born on September 29, 1966, when it officially went on sale as a 1967 model.
Key dates in the Camaro's creation:
• May 17, 1966: Production of the first hand-built prototype began in secret at a GM assembly plant in Norwood, Ohio.
• June 28, 1966: Chevrolet officially revealed the name "Camaro" at a major press teleconference.
• September 12, 1966: The Camaro was shown to the press for the first time in Detroit.
• September 29, 1966: The first production models arrived in
dealerships and were offered for sale to the public.

I remember that date. Chevrolet shipped the cars in with covers on them, and were kept at the dealers, at least at our local dealer, covered. When the debut day came, it had been advertised on TV, radio, and the newspapers.

People lined up to get into the dealerships to see the new cars. I remember dad driving to the local Chevrolet dealer on Sunday when they were closed to see the Camaro. The place was as busy as a drive through with everyone wanting to see the new Chevrolets, especially the Camaro.

There had also been quite a ruckus a few years earlier when the new Mustang showed up at the local Ford dealer.

I remember the first Mustang I saw in person when they came out. Mom and dad took me with them to a drive-in movie. Just before dusk, a new Mustang pulled up next to us two empty spaces away, making the whole car visible. It was a solid white one, and sharp as a tack.

Is that like a side by side for urban driving?
They were fiberglass tubs that you could buy in the late 60's/early 70's,that you then mounted on a VW Beetles floorpan. So they were basically a cute looking VW Beetle, lol

You can buy a revamped version of them now,as they've been brought back from the dead.

The wife has a good point......

A guy that I knew and was a good customer got killed in a rail buggy when someone pulled out in front of him. Not easy vehicles to see, and these days, it seems everyone is in a big hurry with no patience, and on drugs.
