So I just brought the truck in for my inspection and mentioned a whining noise that's been getting worse over the last few weeks.

I suspected a pinion gear bearing or carrier bearing.

They opened up the pumpkin and noticed metal shaving. They didn't tell me how bad but they essentially quoted me a full rebuild or remanufactured rear end swap. Swap would run me $2300 plus tax, rebuild $2500.

That just seems crazy expansive considering an auburn diff with new pinion and rain gear and bearing would likely cost less than $1g and the job shouldn't take more than a few hours.

Not to mention that the shaving are likely from the bearings themselves ... Didn't really get any vibes from the rear, just a high pitch noise.

Truck is an 03 1500 5.7L SLT quad 2wd with 93k miles so I'm debating what to do or ask.

Any input would be appreciated.

After looking at some prices, the parts alone should be under 1k and thats including new everything gears, lsd, bearings ect....i think you should call different shops and compare prices.

I rebuilt my rear end for $300, but i did myself. The average rate for a rear rebuild is around $800-1000

If it is a factory LSD, then you could be looking at a broken clutch clip. These sometimes cut the housing. Many years ago I bought a complete DTT, major overhaul kit and Ring and Pinion for around $800 and had a dealer install it for $400. Since then I've rebuilt it myself using a few hundred dollars worth of tools I got off of ebay.

My cost on a complete (minus brakes) remaned rear axle assembly is about $1200. That being said, if that's how they quoted it the price is in line. If the are only quoting a new diff and keeping your axles in there it seems a bit high.
