The defect can result in the ability to shift the transmission out of the PARK position without a key in the ignition or a brake pedal application, which increases the potential for an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in a vehicle crash or injury without prior warning.

Funny. My first car was a 1968 Chevelle Malibu. It had no ignition interlocks whatsoever...no brake needed pressing, no special button to press while turning the key (ignition switch was on the dash) AND a column shifter.

Not only did I manage to never accidentally shift out of park, I even managed to never shut the key off with my knee.......

I remember my dad's 1996 ram 2500 was able to shift out of park without keys or depressing the brake pedal. I found that out the hard way.

Now that we know about this defect I wonder who would be responsible for damages if it came out of park & ran into another vehicle in a parking lot? I am not used to putting the e-brake on since it is a automatic, but might need to start doing this until they get the parts in.

Are you guys interpreting this as “the truck can shift out of park all by itself, without any human interaction”?

Now that I look at the recall it does appear that you have to physically pull the gear selector. I first thought it could pop out on it's own.

There have been reports of unattended vehicles rolling away, especially if parked on an incline. That is why the parking brake recommendation was issued.

The grand Cherokees of early 2000 vintage we're notorious for that, as are the new Cherokees with the 8 speed, and several other Chrysler vehicles over the years. Really seems like a running problem.

This is why you should always use the parking brake and aim your wheels appropriately.
