We have a 2022 RAM 3500 HO Cummins DRW 4x4 long bed w/Aisin Trans -- the rear tires need to be replaced. The two front tires are relatively new because after we got the truck, the alignment was out and it took some time to find a place in the area that has a rack large enough to align the tires. The tires got so bad on the outside edge that they were replaced with same type tire that is on the rear. Now, rear tires need to be replaced.

We use our RAM to tow a Jayco Pinnacle 5th wheel. We only use 4 wheel drive when absolutely necessary - in other words, we don't go off-roading.

Question: Is it absolutely critical to replace all 6 tires at the same time if I am going with a different brand tire (but still the same size)? All the tire shops say replace all at the same time - but they are in business to sell tires. I hate to replace the front tires if I can get 40k miles from them.

What say you? I appreciate your input.

Hit the nail on the head. When you did the fronts due to an alignment issue, it wasn't required to do the rear because they were still in good shape. Same thing here, your rears being shot has nothing to do with the fronts.

If you end up stuck in a muddy camp site, an 1/8th in difference in tread height when putting it in 4wd will be the least of your concerns.

Only time it will be a problem is on high traction surface as in pavement
You may find you need to backup to go back to 2wd because of binding

You didn't state brand, mileage, date code, and how they are wearing now along with tread depth?
These are things I'd consider.
The issue you had from new is common on the duallies because from the factory they have them toed in way too much. Ideally you want them set at 0 toe. Second, the stock tires are junk. I barely got 20k out of them along with many others.

So to sum it up, don't go with the stock brand tire, Nexen. Personally I run Wildpeaks now for about 40k miles and will probably replace them in 15k miles.
If your front ones are a couple years old with wear on the outside edge starting again I'd have the toe set to 0 and do all 6 tires. And I'm not a salesman but I like to have them all match.

We bought the truck used a little over a year ago. I negotiated new tires on it before we bought it (they put on Arroyo Eco Pro H/T, a tier 3 tire).
Alignment is good now - new front tires are wearing evenly (front tires mounted in April) and have 10/32 tread remaining. They were manufactured in 38 week of 2024.
Probably will go with Bridgestone (Bridgestone Dueler) on the rear and when the front tires reach end of life, I'll put bridgestone on the front as well.

Sounds like a good plan. In that case, I'd keep running the front ones too.
