We recently bought a '16 Sport. I am doing some rust preventative measures to prepare for winter. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect the wheel well lip? It is vulnerable to rock chips and salt and other crud can get past the wheel well liner and sit on the inside of the lip. I am not a big fan of bed liner type products for this.
Are there any flares that wrap far enough under the fenders to protect this area?
How about a bead of silicone between the fender and the liner?
I am curious to hear what those of us in the rust belt are doing. Thanks!

Whatever you do, do not use fluid film if you ever plan on working on your own truck, or know the mechanic. Stuff is nasty. Use truck bed liner in a spray can.

Clean the undercarriage of the truck.

Prep and paint it with POR15.

I removed the liner and painted the wheel well lip as well.

Then do fluid film or Krown rust proofing every year or two depending on how much salt they use in your area.

As for working on it after, I would definitely do your oil change before getting the film out on. Or do it a few months later. It’s not that bad though, unless you’re changing out the whole suspension as it will have a film over the metal. But bring a new truck I can’t see you underneath more than once or twice a year.

Side note:eek:nce it’s sprayed don’t park in your garage or force way as the oil drops for a few days and will stain the concrete.

As for what 2010 infantry vet said, don’t use bed liner or any hard coating. If a bit of it cracks or chips which it will. You will get rust and you won’t know it. Then a couple years down the road it all flakes off and you have rust everywhere. My sister had it done to her car and it rusted to ****. It does work well for sound deadening purposes.

This is all assuming you’re keeping the truck for years.

This is what POR looks like when it’s done.
This is a 2013.

You could also grab a can of fluid film and periodically spray the wheel well lip and area to be extra careful.

Thanks for the replies. Any thoughts on how to protect the painted surface of the wheel well lip from rock chips?

+1 vote for oil undercoating. it creeps into all of the creases where paint can not reach and where the rust starts

hemi395 has the best post I have seen about this for our trucks

I had my '17 sprayed with ProFleet oil. He took out the taillights, got into every nook and cranny. Drilled some holes to get onto the center sections of the rockers. Then sprayed thick slime on the underside. Dripped oil for 3 days and smelled lime tutie fruitie for 3 months. That oil creeps onto every joint. Pretty amazing. Won't stop rock chips.

My experience restoring cars tells me that POR 15 won't adhere well unless the surface is rusty or it has been media blasted. The label on the can says the same.

POR15 is good stuff . But the prep is the most important part. Been using the stuff on farm equipment and vehicles for 25 plus years.

If you are putting it on anything but acid etched metal, blasted metal , or etching primer, you are basically wasting your time and money.

POR15 is a good product and I have used it for 30+ years now ... up until last year when Martin Senour released a product to specifically to be better than POR15
It is called RustProof MD ..... without sounding like a salesman all I can say is all the faults with POR have been addressed and fixed in RustProof MD
UV resistant
Will stick to any scratched substrate and prep is with a wire brush or 180 grit sandpaper
Loves to go directly over rust and corrosion on steel and aluminum
No primer or etch required.
Gloss Black, White, Gray, and Dark Gray
Cheaper than POR15
Available at all NAPA stores nationwide

I have been using it for 15 months now and absolutely love the product.

Just purchased another Dodge Ram and will be brushing on this product underneath and feel great about the protection it will give me.

Best Regards

I removed the rear wheel well liners to clean the box sides and noticed there is some black rust preventative stuff brushed on the inside of the wheel well lip. Is this factory applied or did the previous owner do this?

Fluid Film or Krown, it gets where others cant simple as that and thats where the rust starts in all the tight places you cant get to with paint or bedliners.

IMO, as someone who has been wrenching on my own vehicles for 35 years, I would rather get my hands a little grubby than have to deal with rusted bolts or bolts covered in undercoat. If your mechanic doesn't like getting his hands dirty than you should probably find a new mechanic. Both our vehicles get Krown coated every year right before winter.

I always take my new autos to my local detail shop Great Lakes Chemical and have then apply the tefflon paint sealant, Rustptoofing and sound deadener.
I have had autos for 10 years, and have never had any paint or rust issues.
