I have a 96 with the 5.2 my overdrive button is not working right is there a way to just hook up a different switch

I had to do that with mine. I bought a push button from Radio Shack, pulled the wires from the steering column and ran them to the button I installed on the dash. Make sure whatever button you get does not make constant contact when pushed. It should only have an electric current when being pushed and no current when your finger is off. The wires are solid not braided, so be careful when running as to not break them. This job only took me about a half hour to an hour. Good luck.
