I would like to take off the bed and put down artificial wood. Ideally I'd like to replace the tail lights with a set that will accept the existing harness. Any recommendations or should i just keep using the existing tail lights?

First, don't use Trex or similar material to build a bed. It is compressed wood and plastic recycled material not meant to have heavy loads placed in it without a lot of support (I.e. any pressure point where a load makes contact will need to have a support beam underneath that exact spot). It will chip very easily when loading and unloading, sag over time, and just not hold up. Use good solid pressure-treated wood and get a bed that works.
