Throttle Body Cleaning...

There's a lot to said for using top tier fuel. Wally World cheap fuel is pretty dirty in my opinion. It's worth the few extra cents to me for fuel with more detergents etc. It's the least I can do for my Hemi; feed her well. I'm sure there's more you can do but this helps keep things clean. Just sayin'

Are you guys removing your TB to clean it? And if so are you spraying any cleaner in the intake to try and clean it out as well? Ive never done a TB cleaning before so I have some questions.

Yeah. Removing it. Takes seriously a few min. There I believe is a cleaner “sea foam” that people spray into tb with truck running. Others will chime in. I haven’t done that but maybe next.

The throttle body is removed for cleaning, use only brake cleaner, and do NOT spray into the throttle body to clean the butterfly plate. Spray a clean micro cloth with the brake cleaner, wipe out the inside diameter, and the butterfly plate, for heavy deposits, use a small tooth brush. Continue this process until all areas are clean. Once you reinstall your throttle body, you must do a relearn by following this procedure:

If the throttle body has been replaced, or removed, cleaned, and re-installed, the following procedure must be performed:


a. Disconnect negative battery cable from battery. Leave cable disconnected for approximately 90 seconds.


b. Reconnect negative battery cable to battery.


c. Turn ignition switch ON, but DO NOT crank engine.


d. Leave ignition switch ON for a minimum of 10 seconds. This will allow PCM to learn throttle body electrical parameters.


e. Turn ignition switch to OFF.


f. Turn ignition switch to START position, crank engine normally.

What a great and helpful post. I suspect that the reason you and others make the point, DO NOT spray TB cleaner into the TB is, we do not want cleaner to get into the TB control module that is attached to the TB. If so, I can imagine that cleaner on the electrical parts/sensors etc in the CM is not good.

If you leave it on the truck, take the intake off and make sure the engine is warm, spray throttle body cleaner or intake valve cleaner in to the engine and keep the rpm up. Wipe it down with vehicle off.

I’ve done Seafoam through vacuum line and through intake. It doesn’t really clean the carbon buildup in the intake from the pcv. I did a before and after with a Borescope camera and all it did was make the carbon goopy. It does clean the valves and piston head a bit.

Correct, you don't want to get cleaner into the position tensiometer attached to the throttle butterfly shaft. By the was NEVER use throttle body cleaner, ALWAYS use BRAKE CLEANER.

NEVER use throttle body cleaner, ALWAYS use only BRAKE CLEANER.

I used autozone non chlorinated brake cleaner. Sprayed a toothbrush scrubbed. Wiped down with shop rags. Never sprayed the tb it’self. I had zero issues cleaning and no cel ever came on. All good

This was my testing. Yes it works but I found CRC and amsoil PI work better.
