Hello all.
I have stock rims r17 and currently running a 295/70. I'm in the market for new tires and wondering if anyone here is running a 305 or 315 and having any clearance or ride issues.
Thanks for any input

Assuming you are talking about a 305/70R17 or 315/70R17 tires. Just to clarify because the second number (70 in the above) affects how tall the tire is. Meaning a 305/60R17 is a different height than a 305/70R17.
But in any case, most people clear the 315/70R17 size stock with no issues. That is basically a 35x12.50

The tire you are running now is already 11.6" wide. The 315 is 12.4" wide. The standard 17" tire was a 265 70 17, which is 10.4 wide and the stock rim is 17x8". You are likely already wider than that rim is optimal for and going even wider means you should look at different rims.

4x and oly, do you guys run your tires aired down to 10 to 15 pounds and do you have bead locks on your rims? Reason I ask is aired up there is already better than 2.25" inches of bulge on each side with a 12.5 wide tire on an 8" rim, so I can imagine an aired down tire popping out of place pretty easy on stock rims.

From my experience that is not how it works. If you have a 12.5" wide tire for example, the more narrow rim will hold the bead better as compared to a wider rim. That is because to debead a tire you have to push the bead inwards, and this is harder to do (less chance of debeading) the wider the tire is compared to the rim. I've been into off-roading for many years and this is well known in our club. I personally run a 15.5" wide tire on an 8" wide rim, and have several friends that do the same. It is rare anybody ever loses a bead even aired down to the single digit range. I have also personally ran an 13.5" tire on a 10" wide rim (same vehicle, same tire and wheel except for the size) and I would regularly debead tires if I went much below 20 psi.
If you have every mounted tires you will know that the wider the rim in comparison the tire, the harder it is to get the bead to seat. The harder it is to get the bead of the tire pushed outwards to seat on the rim, the easier it is to debead the tire.

That is interesting. Yes, I actually did work in a tire shop and have mounted lots of tires of all sizes, even split rims. Here we air down mostly for sand, muskeg, snow and mud. There is very little rock crawling were we go. On vehicles we need to air down often, we run bead locks to keep them from slipping on the rim or popping off.

The idea that the narrower rim puts more pressure on the bead actually makes sense. Am going to have to give that approach a try. Thanks.

No beadlocks….factory wheels. Ive never blown a bead. I dont do a lot of offroading, but do air down every summer when going to the silver lake sand dunes. Usually run the fronts around 18-20 psi and the backs around 12-15 psi. Never had an issue spinning doughnuts or catching a little air.

Same goes for the jeep rubicon i had before the wagon. 12.5” wide tires on stock wheels, which are 7” wide. Never popped a bead off the wheel.

This is good info. I am looking to go to 35x12.5 this spring and the idea i need to spend on new wheels (ei Method at 8.5”) to be “in spec” seems ridiculous!

There are many 35x12.5 tires that are spec’d out for an 8” wheel.

Hi Timber,
I have a 2022 Power Wagon with the stock 17” rims. I’m running BFG KO2’s 35x12.5x17’s with no issues or rubbing. Hope this helps you!
