I'd buy one so quick I'd make your head spin. When I was in the Jeep world, there were fellas with Jeeps that were built similar to mine (1tons with 38"+ tires) that would get mid 20's for fuel mileage, be street able, and still be able to climb up a pine tree!

I am eagerly waiting for a Ram 1500 diesel. Although more power is always nice, the VM 3.0l turbo diesel could easily power a half ton truck...especially if they mate it to an 8 speed auto like they are supposed to in the Grand Cherokee. My guess is it could be rated close to 10,000 lb towing and get high 20s mpg (real world) on the highway. My 2013 Porsche Cayenne diesel has a 240 hp 406 ft/lb 3.0l turbo diesel with an 8 speed and it can get 35 mpg cruising at 80 mph (2000 rpm). The big advantage is the low end torque, which is massive...a real benefit in a truck. It is very pleasing to only have to tap the throttle and have your vehicle accelerate strongly vice having to stomp on it to get the rpms up into a N/A gasoline engine powerband.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that this motor is pretty much at its max for power, I'll do some searching and see if I can come across that article. The option to tune a diesel motor for more power is what entices me about them.

I posted this in my new member into thread, but it is probably more applicable here:

I just got back from a vacation to the Pocono mountains in PA. My roadtrip experience driving my Porsche Cayenne diesel on this trip has convinced me (I was really convinced long ago) that a 3.0l turbo diesel in a 1500 Ram would be perfect. I will paste what I wrote on my Cayenne forum below. Keep in mind that a 2013 Porsche Cayenne diesel is only 350 lbs lighter than a 2013 Ram 1500 quad cab 4x4 SLT (Pentastar V6 w/8spd). The Cayenne never needed to downshift even on the steepest hills when cruising at 75 mph (1850 rpms in 8th gear). My cayenne has the same power ratings as the Fiat sourced 3.0l diesel, and is definitely quick...basically what I am saying is a 3.0l turbo diesel in a RAM 1500 will get great fuel economy, have good tow capability, and WILL NOT be under powered in any situation unless comparing to the Hemi's top end power.

"I am happy to report the Cayenne diesel is an AWESOME road trip vehicle. I drove from Baltimore, MD to the Pocano mountains in PA, took a short vacation, and drove back. This vehicle is pure magic for power, comfort, and fuel economy in the 75-80 mph range I was usually driving. Here are a few quick bullet comments explaining my fuel economy and the trip:
- 450 miles highway driving (mostly hilly/mountainous)
- 100 miles in and around town (mostly hilly/mountainous plus winter driving conditions)
- 700 lbs of passengers and luggage
- 30+ mpg there & 33+ mpg back

In a nutshell, I drove 556 miles on 3/4 tank under non-optimal conditions (extra weight, lots of hills, driving faster than speed limit, some city driving, etc). If I had driven like this until empty, it would equate to getting 740+ miles on a tank."

Realizing this, I'm pretty sure if you put it on cruise control at 70-75 mph on a flat surface without traffic you could probably get 36-37 mpg, which could yield a theoretical 950+ miles on a single tank of diesel (26.4 gal). Crazy."

This is great info! I sure hope it applies to the RAMs!!!:ehcapt:

I would definitely be interested in a ram 1500 diesel swap, but would want a bigger and more powerful engine than that. Hopefully cummins could come out with a motor for the light duty trucks

My thoughts exact regarding bigger and more power. I am trying to make the point that the fiat 3.0l turbo diesel would work well in a Ram 1500, but more power is always better. I think something similar to this would sit quite nicely in a Ram 1500...2013 Porsche Cayenne S Diesel Debuts With V-8 Power

Just to give everybody an idea of what is possible with a 3.0l diesel mated to an 8 speed. The attached pic is from my Porsche Cayenne diesel driving from Baltimore to Annapolis on Christmas day. I generally drove conservatively and feathered the throttle, but I did get froggy a few times during the trip and broke 100 mph...and still got almost 37 mpg in a 5000 lb SUV. The Ram 1500 reaaaallllly needs a diesel option sooner than later.
