Hi Treb, well, we got our new to us used car and i want to give Undrdog coating a try. The car is a 2022 with only 10k miles on it and, to my eye, the paint looks basically new. I see no swirls or scratches. The dealer put a coating on it called Perma-Plate, I'm sure it's crap...
So a couple of questions... How do I prep the car? I have a random orbit polisher with some mild Maguires polish and have used a clay bar in the past. I really don't think it needs the polisher. Maybe clay bar? Do I need to strip the Perma-Plate off? What's the best way to do that? Is the small bottle of Undrdog Pro enough? The car is a mid-size SUV, charcoal grey color.
Thanks for any advice, I sure appreciate your willingness to help out!
Congrats on the newish car! I actually had to google that one. It is some sort of protective coating. You will have to remove that first. I'm going to say Meguiars 105 with a Meguiars black microfiber pad to get it off. Then you will have to polish it afterwards. Trust me it will make it pop. Listed are the steps you need to do in order start until finish.
1: Using Undrdog Soap wash the entire vehicle.
2: blow dry or towel dry with a good drying towel.
3: Using you DA and the Meguiars black micro fiber pad and Meguiars 105 prime the pad and start removing the coating. You may or may not see it coming off. It is tho. I know when I removed Undrdog to test the Koch Chemie C0.02 Ceramic Coating I didn't see mine. Once this is done start over. You will need to periodically blow your pad out with air.
1: Using Undrdog Purps spray the entire exterior. Wait 10-12 minutes it may or may not turn purple. Spray it off. This acts as your claying.
2: Using Undrdog Soap wash the entire vehicle. Make sure you don't feel any contaminated things on the paint. Simple use your hand across the panel as you are washing it. If you do, Ill add a step 3. Its happened once for me.
3: If you feel contamination you can use a clay lubber and clay and lightly rub it on the area to remove it.
4: Dry it off again.
5: At this point if you are happy with the way it looks then I would highly suggest Koch Chemie F6 and either a Rupes Yellow Foam pad for a non metallic paint or use the black microfiber you used in the coating removal. You could use Meguiars 205, but Honestly F6 is the best finisher. The clarity is insane. You will periodically need to blow your pad out with air.
6: After you remove the polish, its time to prep the paint for coating. You can use one of two things. Wax and grease remover in a spray bottle or Carpro Eraser. Spray it on your microfiber towel and wipe each panel. I use a stick light to make sure I didn't miss any left over polish. Ill link everything I suggest at the end.
7: Undrdog Pro. The small bottle will easily do your SUV. I did my truck and my wifes jeep with it. So with a legit coating. Make sure you are in your garage and its cool outside. Watch the humidity as well. If the humidity is lower, the set time may take longer. If its higher, it may take less time. Using rubber gloves and with a new applicator pad prime the pad with the coating. I would start with a fender first. Just until you get the hang of it. Undrdog likes to bubble. Its a waiting game with this coating. I usually start checking it around the 8 minute mark. When I was first discussing it with Joel, he told me it will literally come off like butter. It does when its ready. With two microfiber towels go side to side make sure you get it all off. Go back over it with another clean towel. Then panel wipe. That basically means if you did the fender. Wiper two feet onto the door top to bottom and the same with the bumper. The coating likes to move. Using you stick light check for any remaining coating. It will look cloudy. Repeat around the rest of the paint following the same process. Total time per panel is 8-15 minutes
8: Go around the entire vehicle one more time with your light. Places coatings like to hide that you can easily miss. Around mirrors, the back side of the hood, emblems, around license plates especially around the rear bumper, and glass. Don't worry it will take a few hours to fully cure so you have time to catch anything you missed.
9: Wait period. Although I have been told you can wait a few hours and then it can get wet. Personally you have now invested this time into the coating. 48 hrs is my wait time. Thats with any real coating ceramic or Undrdog. Don't touch it!
10: After 48 hours you are good to go. It can now get wet.
11: Wait two weeks before your first wash. After that it is just as simple as the two bucket method and Soap. Once a quarter after you wash it Use quick detailer for help maintain the coating. It is super simple. Make sure you wash all of your towels in the washing machine really good. If you have any question please don't hesitate to ask! I love helping!
