I am new here and have decided on a Ram as the upgrade from my GMC Envoy.
I currently tow a camper that weights about 5000lbs fully loaded. Hitch weight is about 450-500lbs.
I currently have a weight distributing hitch and assume due to rear end sag, the 1500 would also require using one.
Do you think a 2500 would need the WDH? I would use sway control, but getting rid of the WDH would be great.
Thanks in advance.

With only 500 lbs tongue weight, I wouldn't worry about it...

The wdh will greatly improve truck handling, even if the truck itself can handle the weight. I have a 3500 and pull a 8000lb travel trailer. The 3500 can pull the trailer on the hitch a
One, but it's night and day better with the wdh bars on.

FYI, check out the Equalizer wdh hitch. Ive used all manor of the chain type wdh hitches, and they're horrible in comparison.

I have a 2500 and pull a 3500lb trailer with a 9500lb skid steer on it. Piece of cake.
I do however have a lot more weight on my hitch than 500lbs. But if you have the Cummins your overall truck weight is around 8600lbs so a 5000lb trailer won't even feel like it's there.

With the weight of your hitch, you won't need the WDH but it will make your trailer ride very smoothly. Also if you ever want to upgrade your trailer you should be already set for that.

Here is a bit more information on WDH though if you want to look through it. It might help a bit with what you want to know about it.

Yea a small 21ft wake boat weighs over 5000k and those trailer use surge brakes and I have yet to see any truck use a WDH with one of those.
