3 tahoes scale said 31,500 lbs all togather tow every day got 9.9mpg on this load on 87 tune 87 fuel custum muffler - make a big difference

Is 31,500 the trailer & load or does that include the truck?

Do you have to go through weigh stations? If so, how do they handle your load exceeding the trucks CGVW?

I'm glad to see the 6.4 will handle a heavy load.

My skidsteer weighs about 9.5k, throw in a 30' tandem axle dual wheel goose and it's a decent load.

I don't move it far of often, so I was hoping the 6.4 would be up to the task.

I've owned a lot of diesels(I have 2 Powerstrokes now and have owned 4 other Powerstrokes, a dozen Cummins trucks and a GM diesel).

I'm planning to order a DRW 6.4 gasser. The new diesels are junk IMHO.

This last weekend was a whirlwind. Helped a friend move from western to eastern Wyoming. Left early Saturday and got back late Sunday. 445 miles one way to his new location. Used my 3 place steel horse trailer with tack room loaded up as much as we could. By the time I got back to my town and topped off my tank this is what the evic said. Hand calc'ed....900.3 miles / (16.51+13.94+24.54+19.45+15.58) gallons = 10.00 mpg. Not to bad. Best mpg I ever saw with my 2001 CTD was 13 pulling this trailer.

The profile of the trip went something like this: 7200 ft to 6600 to 7400 (continental divide) to 8500 to 5800, then down to 4300 feet with all the hills and valleys in between. Reverse that to get back. Kept the cruise set at 67 mph and locked out 6th. Used the manual shifter instead of tow haul mode. Just been finding that works better as I can stay right up in the power. Trans. programming takes to long to shift. Speed will drop 5 before doing anything then your climbing out of the rpm hole. Never had to use 2nd the whole weekend. At hwy speeds, on +4% grades I had to drop it to 3rd, it shoot right to 4000 rpm at that speed and hold right at peak torque...good stuff for the 6.4. Hardest grade of the weekend I pulled was heading back with empty trailer southeast out of Lander, WY to get home. You go from 6000 feet up to 8500 feet with a few long pulls of 7% grades. Truck held third and oil temps hit 240. That's as high as I've seen temps. Coolant was in the 220's, transmission was at 190. Imagine I'd see the same thing if the load was heavier and if the truck needed 2nd gear at slower speeds. Suppose the truck nannies would shut her down if it got too warm.

I've driven the very same roads when I lived in Rock Springs and they can be a killer! Glad you had a successful trip.

Well we pulled the trigger on a 10,000 pound saber 5th wheel. my truck in the signature didn't have any trouble pulling it home. The engine definitely knew it was there but just chugged along. On some of our bigger rolling hills the truck would shift down into 3rd running 60-65. once it smoothed out the truck ran in 5th and kicked into 4th occasionally...

as far as stability, i dont think you beat these new 4th gens. They just handle the weight so incredibly well! when we hooked up at the dealer the tech was impressed that 2200 pounds of tongue weight barely deflected the rear suspension of the truck!

overall, the 6.4 is a power house. i feel the 3.73 gearing is a mistake for this heavy of a truck...

After 224,000 miles and 17 years of wear and tear being used like a diesel should, the original clutch finally gave out on dad's '98 24 valve CTD. Winched 'er up onto the flatbed and gave it a ride into town. Tow/haul mode actually finally felt liked it was programmed right with this load. Probably right near 10K with the trailer. The 6.4 had to grab 2nd gear (5250 rpm) to maintain 62 mph up a 1/3 mile long 6% grade outside of town. This frame design and coil springs just continues to impress me on how stable it is while pulling a heavy tongue weight load.

Well I got my 6.4 mega cab because I didn't want the 5.7 in a larger truck. I needed to finally grow up at 43 years old and by myself a personal vehicle (have driven a company paid-for truck for the last 13 years). I had to have them Mega Cab for its space for all of our family road trips. All the rest that comes with my MC is a bonus and happy I bought what I did. Btw, the chrom on my ball hitch still does not have a scratch on it. Haven't towed yet.

Well what are you waiting for???? ;)

Ha! Well, when we start our two bathroom remodel next month I will be towing my brothers large dump trailer around. We have also been casually looking at TTs for a bit of time but the hang up is the cost of RV Storage in SoCal. There is a bit of a shortage of spaces and when you do come across a space its $3-$400 per month for a 35' space. Don't want to pay that.

Wow, that's crazy and at the price I don't blame you for not wanting to pay that, I'm retired military so I'm hoping when I get ours that I will be able to storage it out on base. If not I think the going rate is around $30 to $60 a month.

Yikes!!! typical outdoor RV storage around my home is about $35/mo. I can get a 20' x 40' indoor storage unit with 16' high door for $200/mo! Good'ol California!

2015 Tradesman 6.4 with 4.10 gears. I tow a Jayco Eagle 314bhds. 37' tongue to bumper. Loaded around 9000 I think. Tows very nicely. Likes to stay in 4th gear a lot but it seems wherever we tow there is slight rollers so it can never stay in 5th. That and I tend to use cruise a lot which I think doesnt help that any. I find without cruise it will use ECO a lot more also. All in all very happy with truck. Bought it in October... Almost have 3000 miles on it now..LOL. I average 12 driving around country roads and town. Not too bad really. My evic reads 12.5. Always a .5mpg better than actual. Just got front windows tinted to match rears. Love it!

All these pics make me want to drop out of school get a nice paying job, leave California, get a nice truck and trailer.... STOP IT!!

I dont have pics, sorry... but my heaviest load was 19k# on the scale =/ my friend had a dump trailer and told me that it only weight 6-7k, and my truck is good for 6.5 roughly, so we hooked it up and when at scales we read 19, and my truck only weighs 5500... Surprised nothing broke, never doing that again...

Stay in School! Can't get that good paying job without it. Now leaving Cali? Might be a good idea. Lol. I want to visit the northern part that's for sure though.

They are swapping out the sofa for a trifold so we should have it in a couple weeks.

Drove up to the Hensley office today and picked up the hitch.
