What is this 'Catch can' you guys speak of?

I am a fairly new member and Ram owner, I have seen several posts where you guys mention a Catch Can. Could someone help me understand what it is and what it does?

It catches the oil blow by in your PVC line. Helps keep your throttle body clean too.

It keeps the PVC oil out of the intake. Get one!

Yeah I'm a believer. My ram is around 7k miles. Had a can on it from about the first month. Hasn't gone in for its first oil change yet, but that can has caught at least a cup worth of oil so far. (For the measurement challenged that's about a 1/4 of a quart!)

this is less then a 1000 km between a oil change.
