So i went out this morning to look at the under coating I did last night and I could smell oil. Looked around and saw my back right wheel is covered in oil and I see dripping coming from the brake caliper. It looks too dark to me to be brake fluid but I'm not sure. Here are couple pictures.

Yikes. That's never something you want to see.

If its gear oil it should be significantly thicker than brake fluid and stink worse. My entirely unprofessional opinion would be that an axle seal went bad. Also, I wouldn't think a brake caliper would drip like that all night long. Whenever I've had one start leaking, it's only been when I've applied pressure to the brakes.

I think you're right, I was leaning towards an axle seal as well. I wonder how much will be to replace? Right now it's been one thing after another with this truck. before long I will have replaced everything that can be replaced.

i would check the brake fluid in the booster just to make sure. then pull back the plug and see how much diff fluid you have.

its not a hard install. can get it done in a couple hours.

Yea, def want to check the easiest option first. Nothing worse than spending time and money on the wrong thing. :Grenade:

I took it down the street to have a local garage take a look and. At first he thought brake fluid from the piston. Then smelled the oil and was sure it was gear oil. So on Tuesday ill be dropping that off to have him replace both seals. He estimated between 2-300 total so I'm thinking 2 hours labor plus parts.

The part itself should be about 5 bucks...

Bummer. Sounds about right though. I had the pinion seal replaced on my old chevy and the part was 5-10 bucks, but the labor was 75 or so.

Always expensive to have people do the jobs you don't want to. That sucks.

Week$5.00 really? I'll have to make sure he knows I know that. But that being said I know his labor rate is $80/hr and I'm not sure how long its going to take. I've watched a few videos and it looks labor intense, Does he have to take the wheel off and the axle out? He's a local guy who's been in business for over 30 years and he has a reputation so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. After watching the videos it's not something I'm comfortable with so I'm okay with him getting this done.

Why is it when I went to autozone website and look up axle seals and differential seals it says that they don't fit my truck?

Update: went to autozone and purchased two rear axle seals dropped them off with the truck at the garage this morning. 3.5 he's later and $300.00 my leak is gone. I had him replace both sides replace the gear fluid. He told me he had to heat up and use a 5lbs hammer to get the disc or something off?found out my left rear breaks including disc are shot so ill be replacing all 4 rotors and pads in a week or so. Happy its done but more money then I expected.
