I represent a fire/rescue service. We have two 2014 2500 MegaCab short-bed, 4X4, 5.7L engine. It has a GVWR of 9,000#. What should have been ordered was the 6.4L, 10,000#. In any case, a second person in the cab places us overweight and eliminating equipment is not an option.

Does anyone know if either RAM or a 3rd party outfitter will upgrade the components to bring it to 10,000# with a revised FMVSS sticker. The dealer seems to think that the rear springs are the only difference between the 9,000# and 10,000#.

Any information or assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!

It would seem the dealer should be able to look up the rear spring part numbers, between the 9,000 and 10,000 GVW, and see if there is a difference.

Also check the tire load range rating.

I looked into this many many year ago, and it is not a matter of swapping parts.......it most likely will have to be recertified, and that is not cheap...probably cheaper to get the correct truck

The issue wouldn't really be changing the springs or whatever it is that makes it different mechanically, it would be the fact that you would need to get the actual ratings changed. Chances are I'd expect if it's even possible you would be better off getting different trucks with the proper rating to begin with.

Truck must be re-rated for new GVWR. Long drawn out process. I doubt "Springs" is the only item which would need to be added.

As stated earlier, getting the right truck would probably be cheaper, in the long run, and less liability should the re-rated vehicle ever be in an accident.

problem is to legally up the ratings you have to get it recertified which is most likely very expensive

The only difference is coil rear end vs leaf spring rear end. Like the mid 2000 ford's. The difference between a 250 and a 350 was 1 leaf spring and $700! Lol

Add the leaf springs and then I'd assume you'll need to get ready certified to get the added gvwr. You'll also need (depending on when you live) a yearly safety inspection.

It is a 2014 so all 2500's have coil springs.

I was talking 2500-3500 differences, but that's also something I didn't know! So the 2500 diesel doesn't have leaf springs?
