I have a 2014 ram 1500. I put on a 6" lift and 1.5 body lift. I have 20" rims. Looking to go 37's. It has the 3.21 gears, but was contemplating getting a 3.92 front carrier. You can get a stock unit for 500 or less. It's a quick swap. The rear would be setup by a shop with an lsd installed with the new 3.90 gear. Would this be ok? Is there any difference in axles splines between the two stock gear ratios? I have the 8 speed.

3.92 will be better than your OE but like ^ said a 4.56 would be best.

Dumb question. But what would the higher gear ratio help? I have 3.21 with 37s currently.

The higher numbered rear gear ratio the lower it's geared. This helps keep your truck in the highest power band more frequently. It will vastly improve 0-60 times, pulling efficiency and basically limit how much of a dog your current trucks performance is. Put your stock tires back on and see how much better your truck performs. The higher gear ratio corrects the oversized tires by putting you back in the factory power band designed for your transmission.

But gearing my truck higher should reduce strain on trans?

I guess it would promote useage of all your gears rather than just the first few.

But would you really need 4.56 with the tall gearing internal to the 8 speed trans?

with the 8 speed 3.92 would work, 4.10 would bet better, 4.56 would be awesome. With 37s im talking.

Around town, not so much but once you get into the overdrive gears you would. The 8 speed and 5/6 speed have the same top gear of 0.67 so once up to speed and cruising the 8 speed has no gearing advantage.

That's almost as good as a stock ecodiesel. Impressive....

I thought about rehearing to 4.11's, but figured the 3.92's would work. It's more money and perhaps more down time. There was a math equation that shows

33/33= 1 X 3.21 (Stock setup)
33/37=.89189 X 3.21 would net me 2.86 (37'sw/ Stock gears)
33/37 = .89189 X 3.92 would net me 3.49 so that's what makes me think 3.92's should be fine.

Does the math work out. Am I correct in my thinking? I don't hate the 3.21's. I know the 4.11 or 4.56 would make it feel more peppy, but is it totally necessary?

Geeze and here I am worried about going from 33s to 35s with my 3.73 gears behind my 6.4.

The site I used said you would need a 3.59 to equal stock, but I have no first hand experience to say the 3.92 would work well or not, I would assume so.

I have 3.21s with the 8 speed and stock size tires and I never get 20 mpg at 80. On the highway our speed limit is 70 so I set it on cruise at 75-80 and on the evic it shows around 18.5 usually. 19 would be on the high side. I'm sure if i hand calculated it it would be worse. How are you guys and gals getting such good mileage even with bigger tires? I'd like to know your secrets.
