Can someone help me understand why the 2013 being a bigger engine gets so much better gas mileage then the 2010?

You need to supply more information....like engine size? Hemi? 4.7? Apples to oranges if you're comparing those two engines....

Tranny, my 2011 has a 5 speed so my gas milage sucks, 8 speeds get about 5-10 MPG better that I have seen. I average 13-16 city/ highway. I've seen where the 8 speeds can get up to 22mpg. Of coarse this is based off the computer no hand calculations.

I have the 6 speed in my truck and easily get 21MPG on the highway so obviously mileage between the 8 speed and 6 speed doesn't make a real difference.

The 8 speed is supposed to get 1 1\2 to 2 mpg better.

Your axle gears also play a factor too, and of coarse driving habits. I have a bit of a Heavy foot, but I didn't buy a Hemi to drive it like a prius.

My truck does real well at low speeds. Don't hold me to this, but l think l could get 25 mpg, (showing on the EVIC) if l drove 45 miles per hour.

At 70 mph, with no wind, and a little load, l get just 17. Slowing down to 64, will get me over 19.

A real humid day the mpg goes down a bit. Headwinds are a killer. Tailwinds help a lot. But it seems l get a headwind 80% of the time.

This big truck does better than the V6, '99 RCSB Dakota that it replaced.
