My oil temps have been virtually the same with any weight I've run with the exception of Redline. In both 20wt and 30wt RL runs several degrees cooler than the other oils. But I saw no difference between a 20wt and 30wt oil.

Definitely not going with 0/20, dealership put that in my wife's van one time and it was AFU. Was just reading all the recommendations for 5/30 and was just questioning if I should even consider it.

I have been here for a little while.
Everything bad that has happened with these 5.7L that {I} have read or heard about (pertaining to lifter tick or failure) has all started & ended with a 20Wt.

That's all I am going to say!
You will have ZERO issues with a 5W-30.
You are better off going with a Loaded 5W-30!

Would I have to disable mds to run a 30wt or will it be fine? Read on other sites that 30wt messes with mds if run without disabled.

Thanks syn, next oil change I'll be putting in 5/30.

I always thought that to. Seems those in this thread that are running 5-30 are not having any issues at all.

I've ran straight 40 wt viscosity for over 8,000 miles and had ZERO mds issues , I've ran 30 wt for over 25,000 miles and still Zero issues and my 5.7L is quiet & smooth as any engine I've ever owned ...

Many here run 40 & 30 wt oils and I've never heard of the MDS issue within this thread ....

Dump the 20wt & use a High quality 30wt oil & 100% synthetic media filter and change the oil when your oil life monitor says it's time which will be about 7500 + + miles and you'll be fine ...
Just my opinion .

Wow that's awesome ! I've ran my filters for 2ea oci's over the years . Years ago I use to cut the filters open , haven't done that in a while though.
I've seen 12 k on a synthetic filter with my own eyes and imo it could've gone on for many more miles ...

Rik so I am coming up on my first oil change coming into the winter months in MO. I am pretty much set on redline from what I hear. When I look up a filter for my 2017 5.7 I believe I am finding a smaller filter. I keep seeing a larger one mentioned. Can it be used on the newer 5.7 and what weight would be suggested for the daily driving?

Strange. I saw a good consistent 5-7 degree jump from Pennzoil ultra platinum OW40 (thinner) to Amsoil 0W40 ( thicker)

I found some interesting oil test data on this link, 202 oils tested for their film strength and ranked accordingly. I would choose your oil based on as much info and research possible, good film strength equals good anti-ware performance. An oil with a good additive package and good film strength would be best IMO.
No matter what oil you choose please consider a Used Oil Analysis (UOA) and post it in this thread.

Imo if your going with Redline for a winter oil run , I'd mix 3.5qts of 5w-30 with 3.5qts of 5W or 0w-20 .

The larger filter p/n is RP 20-820 to my knowledge it works on 09 -2017 Ram's with 5.7L with electronic power steering.

Hope this helps !

Well for The factory fill it has been assumed it is PYB conventional. Being used and the fact that you don't know what's in it I would do a UOA on the current oil that is in it. It will give you a really good idea of how well it was taken care of.

Regardless, use whatever oil you want as far as conventional or synthetic, but we on this thread will definitely recommend synthetic first.

We will not tell you what to use but we would also recommend One of these top few choices (IMO all in 5w30, but that is just IMO, no it won't hurt your MDS) even though there are other good ones

Redline
Amsoil
Pennzoil ultra Platinum
Pennzoil platinum
Shchaeffers

As i said. There are others but these are some good ones.

EDIT:
Just note that we always lean towards oil that has high moly & zddp just to help prevent or or even stop the hemi tick and for excellent engine protection on to of that.

5.7cmax: On top of the good advice U&A shared!
Add to that list QSUD 5W-30.
A few within these walls have had very good results with it as well.

Quaker State is made/produced right beside PP & PUP & PYB...

If you do chose to run the More Expensive Synthetics: My recommendation would be follow your OLM for your OCI. This way you get somewhat your $$$ worth.
Draining these Synthetics @ 4K-6K miles mark is a total waste of $$$ & a Oil with plenty of life remaining! That's your choice not mine...

If you are thinking of running a conventional oil instead of a synthetic?
Look in the direction of PYB = Pennzoil Yellow Bottle Or Regular Quaker State!

Both in my opinion are Very Strong Contenders...
Match either with a Fram Ultra & a 5K mile OCI = Winner!

If you follow the recommendation of a 5k O.C.I. then basic conventional dino oil will suffice...Just remember to change the filter will each oil change...This concept has worked well for me for nearly 2,000,000 miles on H.D. trucks...

49 yrs old and ran Quaker State since I was 17yrs old in everything I had with never a problem.
Ran dino untill synthetics got popular then switched, ran ACDelco filters.

Switched my explorer over to Mobil 1 5w30 and a synthetic filter since we only put around 5k a year on it now and will just change it out once a year.

Did the same on my Daughters Pontiac GTP but went with PUP 5w30 for the same reason as it will only see about 7k a year on it now.
