Hey everyone...1st post but have been lurking/browsing for a while.

Looking at an 07 1500 slt megacab with 120k miles. Dealer is asking 16,000. My first thought is they're out of their minds, however, used truck prices in general (at least to me) seem to be outrageously high. I'd have sworn this would be close to a 10-12k truck by now.

What do you guys think? I saw a thread on here from someone looking at 2500 mega gasser with similar miles where the dealer was asking 17k...back in 2012!!

Do prices seem high to anyone else for @8-10 y/o trucks?

First WELCOME and is it 2 wheel drive or 4x4? What motor HEMI ? or ?
For prices look at NADA price guide or Kelly Blue book
2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Values- NADAguides

If it is a HEMI on NADA you look in the ball park, BUT I refuse to pay 16k for a truck or car with 120 k on the clock and 10+ years old! BUT you budget will decide what you can do :) . I would look for a newer lower mileage truck and payment options .. BUT if you really like the truck I would take it to a Garage to inspect it and do a compression check .. May save you from a bad choice ..
Another problem can be the frame if the truck is from the Rust Belt!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, 4wd and HEMI...only engine available on the 1500 mega.

I would definitely have it inspected, but it helps the carfax shows a decent service history.

Thursday I pick up a 2014 1500 quad cab, 5.7l hemi, 2wd, 19,900 miles for $23000. Sale by private owner though. Really the same as the trade in value from what I could tell.

I paid $20,500 for my '11 crew cab 2500 4x4 hemi in July 2015 with 92k miles on it. I sold my '06 reg cab 2500 4x4 hemi with 86k miles a few months before that for $13k. Value drops a little faster here in the rust belt.

Diesels around here are outrageous. Old high mileage trucks are listed for near what they were new.

I've been used Ram searching for about the last 6 months. You're correct, the prices are outrageous. However, new truck prices are even more so. Most new trucks are running 30K at a minimum. I've also been looking for a 1500 4x4 Mega, with 60K miles or less. The going price seems to be about 25K. I'm just not comfortable paying that much for a 9 year old used truck.

Good to get the Car Fax , it is not perfect but helps alot! Also DO NOT FALL IN LOVE with the truck at first sight :) keep a open mind and shop alot. Google is your friend :) Also Listen to any noise you hear, while at idle slow rolling etc! KEEP the radio off so you can hear every sound you can! And if all is well OFFER a lower price. If you have cash in hand or pre approved as the saying go CASH talks Good luck

Yup...found a low mileage mega that was in the low 20s ($23k if I remember). Funny thing, I've got access to auction data and saw where they bought that truck and paid a little over $16k for it wholesale.

And it's not just Dodge either, all 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton trucks from all mfgr. Far as the rust belt, that's what else chaffes my behind. I'm in Illinois and just about EVERY truck I find has rusted out rockers :(

I paid $11,000 for my 2006 1500 reg cab short bed 4wd with 99k miles about 2 years ago. Doesn't really relate to the situation but used truck prices in my area are pretty decent.

So, I drove the 2007 megacab. Drove nice, shifts fine, etc...but...

Now this may be a characteristic of Dodge but when I put it in gear, drive or reverse, it does not move on its own off idle. If I press the accelerator, it moves just fine...no shakes, shudders or anything else. However, just taking my foot off the gas it goes NOWHERE.

Normal? Feels unnatural...torque converter issue maybe?

Don't do it. I just bought my 2012 Regular Cab Short Bed 1500 ST Express for $16,100 and it only has 32k miles on it. After my trade in (broken down 06 ram 1500 with 179k miles), $2500 cash down, and $1,000 employee discount, I ended up only owing $4k before taxes+title+tags.

When I bought mine, they had a few others I test drove. A White 2015 Quad Cab 1500 Express 6cyl with 31k for $21.9k (they most likely would come down to $18k- $19k) and I also test drove a Black 2015 Quad Cab Tradesman 1500 4x4 Hemi with Black Leather, OEM Projectors, Heated + Cooled Seats, 7" Premium EVIC, 20" chrome Wheels, OEM LED Tails, uConnect 5.0 (I think it was 5.0, it was the big one with Navi & Backup Cam In Tailgate Handle). It was a Hemi with the 8spd and 3.92 gears. The thing was fully loaded for $24.5k. They would not budge or come down on the price AT ALL so I passed on it even though it had everything I really wanted in a Ram, even the center console with the slap shifter thing..... I loved it, but A. It was too much (for me) and B. It wouldn't be ready for almost a week (still needed body shop to touch up chips, inspection for pre-certified status, full detail, etc) and I was in a situation where I had to buy something right then and there, as my truck had internal TIPM failures, a bad heater core and my trans was acting up. They still gave me $8.6k for my truck, with 179k miles and they obviously knew about its issues as they were the ones who diagnosed it.

Anyways, keep looking around. After i bought mine I saw a 2015 Blue R/T Sport on craigslist at a dealer for $25k with only 10,702 miles on it, mint condition. If only I had seen that, I would have actually not minded paying an extra $10k for an r/t.

What I'm trying to say is, don't get a 3rd gen (02-08) for $16k- $26k with 120k + miles when you can get a newer 4th gen (09+) with 15k-40k miles for the same price.

Oh yea, here's my 2012 I just got. Only has 32k miles and again, it was only $16.1k and after my trade in, $2,500 cash down and $1,000 employee discount I paid $4k for it lol.

Oh yea they also let me keep my wheels+tires from my 06, gave me the Extended "Platinum" Bumper to Bumper Warrenty for 5yrs starting then (12/09/16) or 100k miles (68k more), whichever comes first. I still have the remaining factory bumper to bumper and powertrain warrenty but the bumper to bumper expires in February of 17'. So I told them everything was good, but in order for me to agree and do the deal, they had to give me my rims from my trade in and give me the free "Platinum" extended bumper to bumper. Free rentals, no deductible, covers everything except brake pads, rotors, glass and exhaust/intake (the truck has a K&N intake & Flowmasters they wouldn't warrenty them).

Also I got 8 free oil changes, free lifetime inspections and 4 free full details. (I use to work at this dealerships detail bay and their full details for pickups are 5+ hours, they use Dewalt buffers, cut & polish, extract carpets, do the engine bay so, wheel wells, door jambs, they clean every inch of the car and they use the absolute best detail products I've ever used)

Sorry for rambling on.... Onto the pictures....

Thanks for the feedback and nice truck !. Just seems prices are out of control around here, especially for crew or magacabs.

Might just wait and go new and keep it for 10+ years. But lord these new truck prices are outrageous too lol.

I'll figure it out eventually lol
