Alright so I wasnt able to find any of the VHT NightShade stuff at any of the local stores, I did however find the Rustoleum Tail Tint spray. Anyone use this stuf before? I am about to get started and just want to make sure that its some good stuff and wont flake off or anything a few months down the road before I start.

Not sure bout the Rustoleum, Oreilly sells the VHT Nightshades, thats what I used and loved it. Might want to pick up some clear coat spray paint to go over them once they dry or they'll fade

I have heard that the rustoleum stuff dries flat instead of glossy, I know O'reillys has the VHT, dont know if you went there or not... but if it doesnt turn out how you like it, you can always take it off and try to find some VHT again :D

i have bought both and used both side by side.

night shade is more of a blue tint and WAY more clear. rustolium tint is cloudy, is more of a true gray (less blue)

night shade is very difficult to spray on in a light coat. seems you must spray a nice wet coat in order for it to lay on flat and glossy.

rustolium can be sprayed in a more of a feather/light coat and can be layed on less dark.

right now i like the hue that rustolium provides. but night shade is definantly more CLEAR and less cloudy. rustolium goes on more even then night shade.

night shade , by far is a better product if your wanting to go DARK. but for lighter applications, IE: slight smoking, rustolium seems to be ok.. just less transparent

i do not recommend either product for headlight tinting. they dont go on even enough to achieve a good look on clear headlight lenses. and i recommend buying headlight tint and having the film installed..... or using a clear coat with a touch of black transparent pigment mixed in sprayed on with an air brush/spray gun

edit : my findings
i did a few tests on water bottles, fast food container lids, and foil...

in each picture, the night shade paint is the one that looks more blue... the rustolium is the one that looks more neutral gray.

night shade on left, rustolium on right. (rustolium is far less transparent, and very cloudy)
DSC07314.jpg

night shade on left, rustolium on right. night shade lets far more reflective properties shine threw
notice you can see the clouds above and the blue from the sky... but you cant on the rustolium side.
DSC07316.jpg

rustolium doesnt allow as much to pass threw on reflective surfaces...

my findings. though night shade has a less even spray, it is far more superior in the quality of paint. it is far more transparent. rustolium sprays on way more even with its better nozzle but the paint is so cloudy it detracts from clear surfaces.

This is what I found. Maybe it'll help?

My lights are "technically" legal and can't be written up. Since they can be seen from 300 ft in day light. Lol. Just not inspection passable because they're not reflective.

Glad it helped!

Well found a can of VHT,

pulled the lights
2011-09-11_14-02-00_816.jpg

gave them a wetsand and masked off the reverse lights
2011-09-11_15-48-24_364.jpg

put on a coat and a half or so of the VHT

Probably going to hit it with one more but not to sure. I like them like they are now so maybe I'll give it a ghosting effect and just do the edges with one more coat instead of the whole thing. I think we have to have them visible for 500ft so this should be good/safe.

Added the final coat, not going to go any darker. Just need to wait for the paint to dry so I can take off my mask and then wait for another wetsand later tonight, clear them first thing in the morning and then buff them to hopefully a mirror finish.

Yeah there are plenty of writeups right now, take a look in the DYI section, I posted a thread there a little while back about it and go a few good tips/pointers etc.

Only thing I need to do now is figure out how long I need to wait before I peel the tape off. I am horrible at that, either to early and it smudges or to late and the paint peels with the tape
